OCUK Average economy figures

57 still sounds too much.

Brim it

Set the trip

Drive

brim it again

gals used / miles on trip = real mpg.

i fill the tank every time and this is what it does.... why is it hard to believe?

my mpg figures might have been off due to me, but it does 550 miles on a tank (into the red) and thats from 43 litres that it takes to fill it up again.

Somebody needs to call VW and tell them to stop faffing around with areodynamic bodykits and really well tuned 1.9 TDI engines in Lupo's and Polos, all they need to do to get 60mpg is fit an old 1.8 Endura engine out of a 10 year old Escort.

maybe the figure is because it hasnt got a turbo. i chose a non-turbo one over the TD escort as the economy is better. i was told the TD escorts do about 40-45mpg.

Cos its not an engine known for good consumption, its an old car...

I don't believe you either. Sorry :)

If Ford could achieve figures like that why would they have developed new engines with worse consumption?

fair enough, you must be a really boring driver tho.

its an escort 1.8 diesel lol.... it does about 90-95 at a push if you have a long enough road. my 1.0 205 would thrash it to 60.

it doesnt corner too badly though and you can get it to oversteer nicely if you lift off. it's flat as a fart when you apply the power again though so its a bit embarassing when you outbrake a quicker car. :o

does anyone own a 1.8 diesel escort or have previously owned one?

Dude give up. Your car does NOT do 57mpg. If it did it would be better than modern TDIs and old Escort 1.8Ds would sell for £++. But they don't and they sell for 30p and a packet of crisps.

As Fox says.. Why would VAG spend millions developing modern TDI engines that do 55mpg when the old 1.8D engine from a period when diesels were known to be abysmal does the same?

Your sums are wrong.

I know someone who's uncle designed part of the Escort before the accountants re-designed it, his escort handled well, he knew what would work.

He claimed it was the 1.3 petrol, but as with all escorts it sounded like a diesel.

Edit:
What size tyres are on your escort? Is the Trip accurate?

The link I posted? 49mpg is the best I can see the for the 1.8D.

yeah, i dont know tbh. like i said, my trip meter says about 550 miles per tank. i could video all 550 miles of it but theres an internet site that says different so you would all claim i shopped it or something anyway. :p

Mercedes CL500 (5 litre V8 petrol) - Trip computer since I last reset it is showing 18.6mpg over 2364 miles. That's mixed driving with probably a slight bias toward stop/start traffic at town speeds.

My 2.0 mondeo is on 30mpg at the moment. All town driving.

When i used to take it to work and do some work mileage trip computer was at 36mpg

You are taking it from the trip computer? ROFL. Use proper sums instead of relying on something with the processing power of my toilet.

As explained earlier in this thread. Brim the tank, record the miles, refill, note how much its filled by and report back.
