OCUK Average economy figures

You are taking it from the trip computer? ROFL. Use proper sums instead of relying on something with the processing power of my toilet.

As explained earlier in this thread. Brim the tank, record the miles, refill, note how much its filled by and report back.

i will repeat in english....

it. does. 550. miles. on. a. tank. (into. the. red). and. thats. from. 43. litres. that. it. takes. to. fill. it. up. again.

try reading my posts before claiming BS. ;)

But I know that 57mpg is BS in an old 1.8D Escort.

YOU CANNOT DO 57MPG IN AN ESCORT 1.8D.

;)

You say you go 1mph over on the speedo and the signs flash?

I find those signs under read by about 5mph, so your speedo is reading a lot over what it should, and your oddometer/trip will be reading about 10% quicker too.

You're doing less miles than you think, Is it the origional gearbox?

Come to the next meet. Ill let you follow a car with a reliable trip meter on a pre-determined route of say 50 miles.

I will buy you 5 cases of your favourite beer if its gets over 50mpg.

Honda Civic 1.4:

Averages 38-40mpg, depending on various factors. It's never less than 38, and I can get maybe 40-41mpg if I drive gently.

Dude give up. Your car does NOT do 57mpg. If it did it would be better than modern TDIs and old Escort 1.8Ds would sell for £++. But they don't and they sell for 30p and a packet of crisps.

As Fox says.. Why would VAG spend millions developing modern TDI engines that do 55mpg when the old 1.8D engine from a period when diesels were known to be abysmal does the same?

Your sums are wrong.
In fairness, they're constantly developing diesel engines due to the fact that emission regulations are getting ever tighter, if modern diesels werent so restricted, huge MPG figures would be possible.

Friend of mine had an Escort 1.8D van. It was so slow it was unsafe, but he "caned" it everywhere and it did 50mpg religiously. At a constant 60mph (he says mostly A-roads), it could easily do 60mpg - it's not that hard to achieve, I could get nearly 60mpg out of my mothers Honda Jazz if I was driving A-roads. FFS, my 3.0d can do 55mpg at that same speed.

Stop with the attacking guys - have you owned and run the same car? It's just being awkward for the sake of it.

Ford Mondeo TDDI LX - 48mpg or 600 miles per tank on mainly A/B roads.

My best tank ever was 630 miles a couple of weeks ago (52mpg). However, atm, from looking at fuel gauge, I can safety say that it is going to surpass the record set a couple of weeks ago! :o
