Who is the best overclocker?

I have never claimed im a hardcore overclocker but always push to get the best out my chips as I have with my C2D. But no I wouldn't say I am a hardcore overclocker. I have a dabble in the Overclocking section now and then and thats about it. Don't even see how this matters as I would never put myself forward due to the fact I have little time these days for even playing with my own kit.

I was just asking a question thats all. :)

Anyway this thread is errr strange to say the least. :p:D

i am :D

Fair enough :p.

Back on topic If I was to choose someone on here it would be either Jokester w3bbo or Fornowagain. All been in the game longer than most of us and have vast knowledge of It.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, cant really say much about what the plan is at the moment just want to run an idea past a couple of people

I appreciate that oc'ing skill is subjective, which is why i made the point about community respect. Essentially i am looking for someone who is competent with Oc'ing and more importantly, should they tell the forum anything, it wouldnt then be followed immediatley with 100 mails saying photoshop and dont believe you etc, i want someone you all trust and believe.

Thanks for the few names that have been suggested, if any others jump to mind then let me know otherwise ill see how we go with the names we have.

Cheers

If its extreme overclocking your looking for then i think Raja will be your man, he has a couple of phase units and has shown his worth in the 3d mark 06 thread. :)

But if you want max overclocks 100% stable then w3bbo is the man. He seems to spend his life running prime and tweaking to get the best out of his overclocks.

I have already mentioned Raja the guy is a legend.

I Have the up most respect for him.

He invited me to bench for OCZ:)

Overclocking skill is a bonus yes... but useless if you don't have the luck of the draw, better overclocks are achieved if you have access to lots of cpu's, pump 'm n dump 'm volts n mhz mixed with a rice grain dollop of arctic silver or peanut butter make your own magic and have phun ;)

1st overclocking experience was on P100 Cyrix an Abit mobo that had an 87.5mhz fsb. The year was 1996 I'm near sure must see if I still have the board lol :)

Cathar is the man to ask pretty much anything about watercooling...

Bundles was another watercooler, who took his Athlon XPs (and eventually a P4C) within inches of their lives...

Brwmogazos was pretty much the one stop shop for all things P4, too.

I don't think any of them has posted in the past year on here - Bundles hasn't been on in even longer (yup - hope he and Mrs. Bundles are well) - so that may explain why they don't spring to mind. However, whilst they may have been comparatively old-school, the same principles underscore everything they did/do.

overclocking doesnt require skill, only patience. very limited knowledge is needed to know how to overclock something. 'knowlegde' is knowing how components react, the best settings to use, how far you can reliably push something ect.

If your wanting results that nobody will question, your probably going to be needing a don, respect wise there quite a way ahead of people in general users eyes.

No offence or anything but just because your a don, doesn't mean that your automatically amazing at overclocking... no offence to any Don in the immediate area :)

Its always going to be a fiercly debated topic who is 'best'. Define 'best'!?

Many of the WR holders have handpicked components and use all manner of highly tuned cooling aparatus to get that extra millisecond advantage in Pi/3dmark. Sure there is a lot of skill also involved in that but its hardly indicative of what the average consumer can expect out of the said cpu. This is in no way having a dig at OPB/Coolaler/Kinpin et al as I have the upmost respect for such guys as they are at the very pinnacle/extreme of this game but they are hardly representative of what a pc can achieve 24/7 of months/years use which unless I'm mistaken is what most users want to see.

Other 'lesser' overclockers buy components and cooling retail that are widely available and within the budget of your average enthusiast yet still manage to attain very good clocks that imo is more representative of what the components are capable of and what potential buyers can expect should they purchase a similar setup. Its interesting watching the the ln2/cascade guys do there stuff but when I make a decision on what next thing to buy I prefer to base my judgement on what the components achieve without the use of extreme/temporary cooling.

It takes just a much skill to take a poor clocking cpu up to decent levels as it does to get a 'golden' cpu within WR levels. Anyone can add vcore to a cpu but that blunt tool will only get you so far - there are many other tweaks, configurations, levels of patience and testing that you will need to employ to get you past the 'average' overclock.
