Bioshock - BORED

Where do you order your crystal balls from then? I've been looking to pick one up for a while.

games like deus ex, they were amazing, and games now still struggle to match the quality that that game brought into the genre. the same goes for hl2 in my eyes. before half life 2 what was there around that time? farcry? with its impossible final few missions, and no quicksave function.

I understand that you think HL2 is the best thing ever - god knows you've made it clear enough.

I just don't understand what makes you think nothing will ever come close, you know all the games that are ever going to come out do you?

Personally I think HL2 was the biggest let down i've ever played. There are some good ideas in there, but the engine isn't that great, and most of it is just re-hashed tripe. Oh, and let's not forget that horrid little application it goes hand-in-hand with - but that's another thread entirely.

I completed both HL games and loved them - I wasn't sold on the rather vague storyline of HL2 though, granted.

I still think it delivered some set pieces that will linger long in my memory.

Yes, there were monotonous passages and some recycling of previous ideas, but I came out the other end glad I'd invested the time to play it.

I played the demo of Bioshock on my 360 and I was impressed up to a point, but I didn't reach the end of it and haven't felt the urge to return since. And this may sound petty, but there just seemed too many items to pick up (bottles and whatnot) and I got annoyed with the micro-management of my environment in that sense.

Odd that - I've played all the Bioware games, and they've got more items than I could ever list! Must be that I'm getting to be a grumpy old man.. :-)

Sounds a bit like doom3 then when everyone couldn't wait to get it & when they did they marvelled at the good graphics & then got bored with endless repetition of shooting the baddies

Can't say i'm bored with Bioshock, its just that since getting MOH:Airborne, i've stopped playing Bioshock (near the end now i think), it's just that i prefer the more frantic pace of MOH:Airborne... Once i've completed that, i'll go back to Bioshock... :)

Thing about Doom 3 is that yes, it doesn't have a lot past shooting all the time. Then again no FPS (IMO) manages to break free from that formula anyway - HL2 is pretty much totally in the same vein.

For me, the game has to create an atmosphere, make me feel like i'm there. If I can't "get into" the game, it won't keep me interested. Doom 3 was so immersive for me, been through it 4 times now and i'm still thinking of going back and doing it over again.

You can wish all you like for new ideas in FPS'es, but I don't see any coming in the forseeable future.

nothing since FarCry & F.E.A.R has really taken my attention for a long time, maybe a combination of getting older (30's) and a lack of creativity in recent games.

i found bioshock totally overated, a decent game but that's it for me ....it's just not very satisfying, but great audio and some good atmosphere at times. the continuous process of moving from one section to another to complete tasks was nothing but a chore and distracted from the game, not to mention spawning .....how lame is spawning in 2007 for gods sake.

i'm also in the anti-HL2 camp, i still haven't finished it as i just get bored and go do something else like compile a new kernel.

The hype for this game had been building nicely for some time before its release. I bought into the hype after viewing various trailers etc and pre-ordered it. Once it arrived, I removed the Big Daddy figurine and placed it lovingly on my shelf whilst I began installation. I decided as soon as the menu appeared that I would play on the Hard setting so I could savour this masterpiece for as long as possible.

I began to play and found myself sucked into Rapture for hours on end with rarely a sitting lasting any less than 2-3 hours at a time. I am currently halfway thru the game (I believe) and decided to have a little break so as not to finish it too quickly.

Seeing how people are comparing this to HL2, I feel it warrants equal scoring easily. HL2 had in my opinion a greater variety of environments compared to Bioshock but that is no reason to rate it higher at all. Bioshock is a king amongst men and should be treated as such, afterall, in my opinion it does deserve it.

Bioshock is my game of the year so far (altho we still have Conflict of War and Crysis to look forward to amongst others so admittingly my opinion may change). However, regardless, it has been an absolute pleasure playing Bioshock and am saddened that others have not enjoyed it as much as myself. I know that I will truly be sad tho, once I have finally completed this true gem of a game.

The odd thing about this 'living up to the hype' stuff with this game, is that the hype only started when the reviews started to come in. I mean, literally a week or two before the first review landed there was little or no talk about the game. The hype started after people playing it thought it was very good and they subsequently recommended it.

I think the game tells a great story, and the voice-acting makes it very immersive. Gameplay wise all FPS's are a little samey, so you cant really hold that against it :)

Dunno... I quite enjoyed it. I loved the design and atmosphere. I enjoyed killing baddies in all different ways. Though the story was better than many FPS games.

I tried to do as much as possible in the game. I explored every single nook and cranny, hacked most machines and vaults, would back-track to pick up ammo, etc. Not sure how long it lasted me in total hours, but it did keep me entertained for a while.

Was I at all disappointed on any level? Sure. I have to admit, I did think it would be more open, with the ability to explore a lot more of Rapture, and not bo totally stuck on rails. However, designing a game like that might take one hell of a long time.

All in all, not a bad game. Not 10/10, but not bad.
