what do you use to attach fans to passive coolers ?

thinking of putting a fan onto a passive cooler that i have, whats the best/safest way to attach it has there are no clips ?

depends on the kind of cooler it is but zip ties usually do for me, or even elastic bands if need be.

i used 4 matches, superglued them to the fan, then superglue the over ends of the matches to the heatsink.

has held on for about 3 years now....

Or good Old Duck Tape !!

Thin cable ties that go through the holes for the screws on the fans that then just wrap them round the cool/card?

You can buy an Antec Cool Spot (I think its called). Or just cables ties, they are cheaper by a long way.

I use Unicorn tears shed by the light of a blue moon....

But, if I haven't got any of those, then cable ties!

I use Guarden wire because it was there. - be careful if you use this not to bridge any connections. In fact I don't reccomend it and must get myself some cable ties.

might seem a bit of a noob question but wouldnt the heat going through the heatsink melt the cable ties ?

Well, we're never talking about that much heat in computer cooling.

So, not enough heat to melt a cable tie, and certainly none of mine have ever melted!

Plastic melts at around 280 Deg C. So no.

There is more than one type of plastic, with different melting points.

For simplicity cable ties melt at over 90c or clockers would keep posting threads about them melting.
