Sending an engine by courier?

Hey guys,

I've had interest in my spare brand new engine that is lying around at my mechanics, but it's from Kent. How would one go about getting it sent down there? It's on a crate, but most places charge an extortionate amount for crates unless you're a regular customer.

Anyone know of any decent couriers for this kind of thing?

What do you class as "an extortionate amount"? Postvan.com will do a pallet up to 1200KG with dimensions of 1m (w) x 1.2m (l) x 1.8m (h) for £87.50+VAT.

Depending on the weight they also do a 75Kg service for about £60 which I used to send an axle down from Norfolk to Kent. So convenient, they picked it up for me and brought it to my desk at work :p

I would probably strap it to a pallet if you can as it'll make it easier to move and they won't get stroppy if it leaks oil or water if it's on its side.

It's already on a pallet, and it has no fluids in it :) it's a brand new engine still how it came from powertorque engineering / ford

I would NOT send an engine palletised like that, personally - unless I was doing it myself in a van.
 
Break it down into induvidual nuts, bolts and components and send them all in separate boxes and envelopes to the person.

Hey, it'll take some time but they'll get it all in the end :D
 
I'd shrink wrap it at a bare minimum, anything that isn't massively strong and sticks out will get obliterated after being slung in the back of a 40 ft trailer and then dragged round various sortation hubs by maniacal forklift operators. That hose is a prime candidate for damage for a start.

oh i was gonna wrap it in bubble / shrink wrap, not send it completely bare :D i thought you meant it wasnt good structurally
 
Ring DHL, Businesspost or TNT and get quotes for a cash job. Leave it on that pallet but by a large roll of large bubble, bubblewrap and tighly wrap it round the whole of the item. Then put some stickers on saying that is heavy but fragile and that it goes this way up and should be treated carefully. (Make sure your stickers say these things politely).

I cannot speak for the others but at TNT we have had a bit of an upheaval when it comes to palletised metal because it's causing so much damage. People are bunging engines full of oil onto any old pallet and sending it on it's way with just a bit of strapping to hold it in place. The damage stuff like this causes to both trucks and other freight is shocking.

To send it with TNT it needs to be crated (not just palletised) and the price on new customer rates (we don't do "cash jobs") will be £631.29 approx + VAT.

Just to save you one phone call anyway :D
