How bad is this tyre?

Thread was basically whether I can drive on it this week for 10/20 miles rather than shall I keep driving on it until Christmas :p

You should drive that to a tyre centre (at low speed) and no further.

At least get the spare on in its place.

Its all about Safety.

Not just for you, but all us other poor sods who have to share a road with you. :)

I'd say if you have a death wish, keep the tyre.

I mean come on you can see the corded material inside, do you really need a 2nd opinion?

I'd trust this more than the 125 wide spacesaver!

I wanted to know if it was "be careful with it", "only drive it to the tyre centre" or "omg she's gonna blow cappin'" bad.

Your really brave. I drove from Oxford to York at just over 100mph all the way(11pm at night), and I was terrified of losing my license, even reached 130Mph (GPS) at one point on the M18. I won't do it again, I didn't feel in control of the car. :(

There's always that sensation when you first go faster than normal.

I remember the first night I had my Escort 1.6 16v, I floored it in 3rd from 30-90 and I almost went in to a trance - it felt so fast! Like going 60 for the first time on your lessons, it feels really fast. Going 100, 130 or 150 for the first time is the same. After a while it feels quite normal and you adapt your driving to suit.

Another thing often overlooked is that the smaller the car, the faster it will feel and the less "high speed friendly" it will be. I imagine a big old Bentley Continental feels quite at home at 100!

Edit: Even at 200 too! mms://ms.groovygecko.net/groovyg/clients/haymarket/Autocar/Jul_05/200mph_512k.wmv :p

Wow!

There were 2 things that worried me when I was travelling at 130Mph on the M18. One was the risk of hitting an obstacle or animal and the other was being caught by the Police.

When I was cruising at around 100 - 105 Mph I was constantly terrified of being caught. Even know the roads were completely empty and I felt in full control of my vehicle.

Do you not panic when your speedo creeps over 100Mph?

Tom

Obviously not. He seems quite proud of the fact that he frequently drives at very high speeds and likes to brag about it on here. It'll bite him in the ass eventually though, high speed driving and complacency don't go very well together, especially when you have a hole in your tyre.

But what would I know, I don't even drive a BMW :)

I thought that at first. Then, after a year of doing it and never encountering these unmarked police cars, I'm beginning to think they don't exist!

Essex police seem to have quite a relaxed towards speeding. Not a lot of fixed or mobile cameras, you can be making some significant progress right past them and they'll not bother, I've driven head on towards both ANPR Evo chase cars while overtaking a lorry on a slightly dodgy bend down a hill and they didn't turn round, sat next to a blues-and-twos Focus estate at 120 with no comeback, pulled over by the police with them saying "sorry, you were driving it like you stole it" (exact words there) and they were just checking I was actually the owner etc. They just don't seem too bothered :p
I thought it was about 1mm by hand, but after checking it, it's dead borderline.

You sound like a tool.

If anyone has ever driven a high performance BMW, they will understand how it is possible to drive fast.

your windows don't start rattling or the wheels vibrating the second you reach 100mph.
I haven't gone fast enough to be scared, I have reached an indicated 140 mph before (on the autobahn). :D

Although I do admit that the e46 is nothing compared to the e39 for high speed.
E39 is yet more relaxed at high speeds.

It may be possible for you to drive fast, but that doesn't mean that everyone else suddenly gets better at paying attention.

All it takes is for someone ahead of you to not realise that you are going 2 x the motorway speed limit (and how could anyone reasonably be expected to think that?) and move out a lane into your path giving you no time to stop and causing a huge accident.

Quite aside from that buying a really fast car does not give you equally fast reactions.

I would agree with you, and I drive a BMW, and not a slow one at that. :)

I don't care what you think.

I don't consider 150 "very high speed". At that speed you can still focus quite clearly on what is going on. I also don't feel the need to tell anything other that the truth as to how I drive. I try and bring a different (if odd) perspective to the forum by doing this.

I hope you don't mean complacent from a safety perspective. Most people would have probably driven around with this hole in their tyre for months, but I reckon I spotted it within days of it appearing and have, based on opinion, limited the driving of the vehicle from this point.

I agree - it would be foolish of me to expect everyone else to compensate for how fast I am going, which is why I compensate for them. I will also not casually overtake people at 140 if there's a chance they are going to change lane. Admittedly, I've had people change lanes inexplicably (a white van going from the 2nd to the 3rd lane, that I was about to go past him in, despite there being no traffic), but I always approach with that in mind and keep a look out for how I can maximise my braking room.

I can think of very very few places where I would have the visible distance to do such speeds for any length of time... Observational distance is the problem, and I would certainly consider 150mph "very high speed".

What sort of advanced driver training have you had?

i dont post on this board much anymore, but even ive read your posts about often doing big speeds on the A13. tbh, judging from what ive seen of your posts, you seem to come across as a 16 year old posting about what car your dad drives

anyone who takes driving remotely seriously and likes to drive quickly but has a sense of self preservation shouldnt be asking that at all.

spam, tbh

The law would think differently. I know I have done some silly speeds before, but you soon realise it isnt worth A) An accident or B) Getting caught, losing your license, and at a very silly speed facing the possibility of going to jail.

I think a lot of people myself included when u get your first fast car hit the magic number where it cant go any faster slow down and then drive sensibly from then on.

I know I did it with the golf Gti and I done it with the bmw but once its done thats it.

I couldnt ever drive daily above 80 I dont want a ban :p
