FAO: OCuK. HR-03 / R600..or other after market 2900 coolers?

Maybe I'll be wasting my money unless I can overclock it more and get even more performance out of it.

Not really mate the card will become silent :P be much cooler also so helps its longevity! :) You could clock it if you wanted to but by no means a pre-requisit!

It costs 35 notes tho, I'll have to sell Bioshock for it, oh well dont play it anymore.

I thought it was worthwhile on my GTS, to be fair though I was overclocking it before that anyways! they can be quite awkward to install however, thats the only problem I found! Also a 92mm fan was ideal :)

Gonna get me one of these once i get some spare notes..

My pc is almost silent bar that silly leafblower on my gfx card..

Btw do you really need a fan on it ? Would it be fine cooling the card without one ?

Still waiting on some installed pictures chaosophy. Also can you tell me if there's any chance of fitting a slim fan in between the heatsink and the card? I can't really tell from any pictures out at the moment. A dead side on shot of the card with it installed would be great :)

It's fited!

Well it's in and good news, main objective has been obtained! It's a darn sight quieter than the stock. Which was what I was after really as i haven't been overclocking the card yet due to not really needing to.

Installation was a bit fiddly to be honest. Trying to get the sink on then the screws through it with the washers and then the back plate and screw caps was a bit of a pain. Got there in the end but have a feeling it might be a bit messy under there with the TIM at the moment. Not too worried though as the MX-2 should be safe and the stock TIM practically filled the whole area before. Only other niggle is I'd feel a bit happier if the ram sinks had bigger foot prints as they don't completely cover the tops of some of the chips. We're not talking a big area though.

Some quick pics....

Case post fitting...

1st boot temps...

With my CPU cooler there was no way it was going above the card with the fan as well, maybe without one and a powerful fan on the cpu cooler you would be ok. Or possibly I could've spun the CPU cooler 90 degrees but just wanted to get it in.

The Sharkoon is running off a 4pin molex adapter, so spinning at full speed. Anyone know if there's a way to run it off of the 2900s fan header? An adapter or is it possible to cut the connectors off and swap them?

Lost most of my expansion slots now but not to fussed as there's nothing using them at the moment. If you hacked the grill/second slot bit off of the card you may just be able to squeeze a thin card between the GFX card and HR-03, but it would be tight. I think I could also get one in the small x1 PCIe slow between the fan on the HR-03 and the X-fi, but again it'd be a tight fit.

It's a shame I can't get ATi Tool working with my 2900 as I really want to do some gaming (want to try out the G9 :) and I could use the OSD in that to monitor temps while I do. So I guess I need to find something else to do while I stress it and monitor the temps closely before risking too much. I think the main chip looks like it's going to be ok but it's the other bits as well.

I'll try and post some more temps later, under load etc, and can take a few more pics if people want.

Possibly a bit pricey one you factor in card+cooler+fan (MX-2 possible not needed as it comes with a tube of thermalright's stuff).

Hopefully more pics/impressions later or tomorrow and will try and answer any questions people may have.

Anyone know what the VDDC slave temp's are to do with? As I just started a quick stress and they shot up to 110! Before under stress they where in the low 90s.

Are they the bits around the main chip?

I applied the TIM like seen here...

but the old gunky stuff when I took it off was kind of filling that whole area inside the outer frame.

nutz, looks like i may need to redo it. :(

Was that 49 degrees at first boot stressing it?

Also how come is your X-Fi light blue :s I thought they were red :s

My temps after installing the hr-03 r600 are 48c idle with the side case off but it can get to 82c on load after 1 hour of gaming.

The temps did'nt seem to go up with overclocking the card to 800/1000.

This is with using a nexus 120mm fan which is overvolted and produces the same/less noise idle and load as the stock cooler set to 19%.

Noise is greatly improved now and it is very silent but i am worried also about the vddc temp as mine goes to 115c under load.

I did'nt check this temp with the stock cooler and was wondering if someone with the stock cooler could post their vddc temps under load/stress?

Monitoring with ATI tool, i get about 55c at idle and 70c under load for the VDDC.

Thanks. Looks like the hr-03 is cooling the core but the vddc is running a lot hotter (115c on load).

I wonder is there anything i've done wrong in the installation or is it just that the stock cooler was cooling the vddc and the hr-03 is'nt?

Stick a fan in front of it or something.

Hi Clock.It,

as per my post above I'm seeing the same. VDDC temps when viewed in ATi Tool where in the low/mid 90s after an hours stress test, since fitting the HR-03 I've had them up to nearly 130! Removing my spare PCI blanking plates seems to have stabilised them at around the 115 range.

Do you know which bit of the card this is so I can look at cooling it? Maybe a link to some pics or the Ati Tool thread you mentioned?

So far it doesn't seem to be causing me an issue and I can't find anyone on the web saying it is an issue. You'd think people who have fitted water cooling would be getting similar issue?

As a follow up to my earlier postings still not had time to do much proper stress testing but just from general observation it's looking like my idle temps have dropped 15 to 20 degrees and load about 20 to 25.

I think with a more powerful fan and mounting it above instead of below the card I would definitely see a bigger improvement. But it is a darn sight quieter, so much so that the first few times I fired up something that uses the 3d clocks I panicked as I didn't hear that familiar whoosh of the stock fan speeding up. :-D

Hi Chaosophy,

i'm in the same boat as you, im gonna have to install mine under the card as my Zalman Flower is in the way. Just a quick ques, which direction did you have the fan blowing in your pic? Down towards the bottom of your case or up towards the card?
