Football **Spoilers** 22/23 September

I think it's laughable for people to think Cole should've got a red for his tackle on Ronaldo. Players do that sort of thing all the time. Ronaldo got past him so he brought him down to stop him having a run at goal. It was a nothing challenge.

Usually i'd agree but like Nokkon said Cole has a history of kicking out when he's losing; iirc he done a similar thing towards the end of the season when West Ham got relegated vs Bolton when they were losing.

Thought that was the only logical explanation :)

Do you think they should have appealed? Baring in mind that they can't have it reduced to a yellow, they can only appeal to have it completely removed.

This is what annoyed me about the appeal really (hence my rightly so comment). I can't believe that Chelsea thought they could win the appeal so why bother? Just seems like they're whinging over it.

The ref made his decision which wasn't COMPLETELY out of order. It was boarderline do you not think?

Yeh they could only win the appeal if they could prove no action should have been taken at all. Which was obviously never going to happen so it was a big waste of time.

I haven't heard anyone say it was a borderline decision, it just wasn't a straight red, simple.
The problem is the appeals system is a joke.
Everyone accused and wrongly found guilty of a charge should have the right to get that charge reversed, you can't do that at the moment because the FA basically say the refs word is final, that's wrong:)

cole has a history of generally being an idiot.
every single match he dives, fouls and always complains to the ref.
one of the worst behaved players going imo

Just out of interest, does the law prohibiting players brandishing imaginary cards to the ref, calling for bookings and sending offs, extend to managers?

No because if it did, maureen wouldnt of been able to sit in the dug out for most of his tenure at chelsea.

Its disgusting, but perfectly expected, that the Mikel appeal was unsuccessful. Why is Terry in trouble?

Not unexpectd at all it seems as FIFA wont allow the FA to downgrade it unless he shouldnt have been booked at all (ie you can get a red card completely recinded but not graded down to a yellow)

Silly appeal if you ask me (Grant may well not know the rule but surely someone in the backroom staff does )

Not sure Terry really did anything - yes he put his hands on the ref, but you can take something too far

Just commenting that I didnt think it was "disgusting" - its FIFA's rule after all (reportedly anyway) - maybe a silly rule, but the appeal itself was a waste of time

What about captains trying to take the red card out of the referees hand whilst hes sending a player off ;)

the whole post makes sense even if one word was misjudged.

My comment was opposite to yours after all - the appeal WAS a waste of time - de facto - it wasnt disgusting as the rule has been in place for ages.

I agree. JT should have been booked, but he gets away with murder (as have all England captains in the past).

Because he wasn't booked he can be charged now.

On that note, is anything happening regarding Noble pretty much punching Nicky Butt? Neither were booked were they?

It's not really wrong, I don't think it would be a good idea as it would damage the credibility of referees.

It's like video footage, nice idea but it would break up the game too much in my opinion.

I don't think it should have been a straight red, compared to other two footed challenges it wasn't high neither did it have much momentum behind it. I suppose it either looked bad from the angle the referee was at, or he disapproves of any two footed challenge.

Like Joe Cole vs Russia, when he happily got the ball using a challenge from behind but was reprimanded and then two seconds later pulled for the same thing when play was resumed.

referees credible??

completely different to video footage influencing in game decisions in my opinion. you can already have a red card rescinded so why not just add the option to have it downgraded to yellow or to have a yellow card given to a player after a match if something was missed by the referee.

Neither were booked. But because it wasn't a match involving the big clubs, it'll all get forgotten about as per usual. I've seen MASSIVE rucks in premiership matches, way worse than anything that we've seen in recent years between Arsenal/Man Utd etc, but no punishment dished out. A few years back I was at St Marys for a game vs Blackburn, Andy Cole lamped Svensson near the halfway line for no apparent reason and then like about 15 players piled in, more punches thrown etc but there was no media coverage except maybe a oneliner in reports, so no further action was taken other than Cole being sent off.

Likewise I remember around 5 years back when West Ham went down, Joe Cole started a punchup at the end of the match but being the end of season it all seemed to get brushed under the carpet despite being 10x worse than what you see in the big clashes.

I think its like MrG said and that the refs decision in finaly and they don't want to be seen as undermining the refs (**** reason i know), the only reason there's an appeal system at all is for complete **** ups like mistaken-identity.

They can issue fines and suspensions for incidents that have been missed though.
