Whats the big deal with Halo?

It's awesome.

You clearly didn't have Halo nights/weekends with your lad mates when you were younger. It really doesn't get much better than 8 guys, 2 flags, some warthogs and booze/snacks.
That sounds like the past 3 days for me :)

Though two people over tunneling was good enough for me... almost every night... Those were the days... Oh how I miss Sidewinder.

I was initially underwhelmed, but once i stuck SP into Heroic mode and got going past the early missions, i found it just got better and better. As for MP, again i was underwhelmed, but once i got a group of freinds together and tried a load of different game modes i then realised why this game is so successfull, theres something in there for everyone.

I now love the SP and MP. Although i wish the weapons were as effective as COD4's :)

I also don't personally see what the big deal is. I think Halo really excels in multiplayer. I've never played the single player in any of the Halo games, only co-op and deathmatch/ctf/etc. Which is a bit weird since I usually only care about single player.

I wouldn't say there's anything particularly special about it, it's just been implemented so well. On a console anyway. Once it's on the PC it loses all of it's magic really. It's just perfectly polished, the controls, the pace and everything is just perfectly tuned to sitting on a sofa with a controller.

Also I don't get the obsession with the story. I suppose I can see why people might think it's so good if they only play FPS games. But compared to other types of games I don't think the story is anything that special really. I find it a little difficult to follow the story even though there doesn't seem to be anything particularly complex in it.

Now that is something that gives it an edge over any PC shooter. It's a brilliant social game.

Yea, thats something I found after my few year hiatus from console games, got the halo 3 beta up and it's so much fun playing with people there next to you...

I spent tuesday -> friday at my mates house playing halo with him and my brother, once I got home and started playing over xbl it wasn't the same.

It's all a matter of opinions. Personally I love Halo because it has a story as opposed to the many mindless shooters out there. The weapons balance is supreme and all have character.

Then there is the online aspect which is just awesome.

Wholeheartily agree, i wasnt a huge fan of Halo 2 but since playing it through again i really liked it. I still think the best halo level ever is The Silent Cartographer on halo 1, i loved how open ended the level was.

The vehicles make halo for me, the Warthog is the best vehicle in any game ever!

I lost countless games in Halo 2 and i have always regarded it one of my favourite online games. Halo 3 have topped that.

I guess if your not a halo person then you wont like it.

Josh

EDIT- Also all my mates had an xbox with halo 2, so going over for LAN matches was immense. 12 mates with beer and halo 2 muliplayer, Awesome!

I never really got into the Halo hype, although it did make me consider buying an Xbox when it was released, and same again with Halo 2 thought it was ok but nothing major, but I love Halo 3 not sure why, just feels so well thought out, off course it's quite linear in single player but it just plays brilliant and has a great story that makes you want to keep playing. I am not sure what is different this time for me, but it just seems to have all clicked into place, as a single player game its a big winner for me. And playing it through with friends is just what gaming is all about for me, massive fun.

I know that im going to get flamed for this, but what is the big deal with Halo?

I havent played the first one on the original Xbox, but I tried it on the PC and it had to be one of the worse FPS I have ever played. I thought nothing of it as it was a poor port over from the Xbox

Anyway, I bought Halo 3 the other day and thought exacally the same, just seems really repeative, slow paced with boring weapons. I played it for about 30-40 mins and I nearly fell asleep, if your going to do a repeative game make a game like Serious Sam, Halo 3 just offers nothing new to me

How Halo 3 is one of the most anticipated titles of all time is beyond me, its not even 10% of Half Life 1 or 2 imo.

So you don't like it, get over it..

Its been hyped up prob most ever hyped game ever ever. Offers nothing new from the previous, some say don't fix something that isn't already broken but hmm wheres the sense of adventure? should have been called Halo 2.1 I think. These people that are saying different are halo lovers.. all the talk of back in the day!! With the mates and halo 2 blinds these people ;)... I remember the same with golden eye on the N64.. blinds!

But seriously MP it could have been a lot better, why put vechiles in maps that are so small they are of no use?! I was well looking forward to some mad buggy chases online over ramps etc. Why do the maps look so crappy for? Dunno the name of it but one that stands out badly is outside in the sand.. looks just terrible! I know I know.. graphics aren't everything but its bloody unacceptable really, this game has been injected with so much money and time that all they can come up with is a game that looks like its running from a graphics engine thats +4 years old, sometimes think i'm playing King Kong on the 360. I have to give funny looks at people that aren't disappointed in the slightest with halo 3.

As for it being fun with friends.. same can be said for pretty much any game. When you are working as a team and having a laugh with people you know its a lot better compared to hearing random annoying people over the mic.

Halo is popular simply because it's great fun. It provides the most challenging and in depth combat i've experienced in any fps, pc or console, and for co-op (now 4 player online :) ) it is easily the best around. The multiplayer is varied, accessible, and ridiculously addictive, and the forge and theatre modes are awesome.

Hardly fair to judge from a botched up PC port. Plus the Halo games have been ahead of their time with each release. Obviously you're not going to find Halo 1 savoury in today's climate, because the game came out over half a decade ago.

Halo 3 is the dog's nuts though, but if you don't like it, don't say anything about it at all.

Saying 'what's the big deal with Halo' when you're going by a crappy PC game of the first game in the series while all the fuss is about the third game is just asking for flames and I am surprised you haven't been charred as it is.

No game has made me play the campaign more than 10 times before on the hardest difficulty (Halo 1). No game has ever held my interest for more than 3 years before (Halo 2 online).

Every other game I've ever played is boring compared to Halo 1's single player and Halo 2's multiplayer.

It's the ultimate marmite game :)

I'm honestly as equally baffled by the people who don't rate Halo as they seem to be about those who do.
