Mate wants Cayenne - opinions?

Nope, though I can't remember which track it was. I think the Cayenne used was a Turbo, and the Elise used was a fairly low powered one though so that may go some way to explaining it.

Exactly, so that proved nothing other than one car with far greater power than another will go faster.

From what I remember, Evo did a test where they pitted a Cayenne against an Elise around a track, and the Cayenne whooped it.

Just had a look at the track times in the back and has:

Elise 111R: 1:29.20 (track damp in places)
Porsche Cayenne Turbo: 1:29.55
Elise S: 1:30.20

So it didn't whoop it, but don't think it did too badly!

Ah but given the general consensus in this thread, then the Elise should go round the corners far quicker. I'll try and dig the article out when I get home and check, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't on a track with massive long straights and a minimum of corners.

Like I say, I can't remember the full details, I just remember reading the article. My bad.

The track times in the back, if they weren't taken on the same day in the same conditions they aren't a reliable comparison

I'd be interested to see the results of the same day Evo test.

I read the same issue, it was an ML55 AMG and a Cayenne Turbo.

The Elise whooped both of them though, did it not?

I thought it was the other way round? If not then evidently my memory is ceasing to function correctly :p

Either way, the track times around the West circuit at Bedford posted by spaz show that the Cayenne is still more than capable through the twisties.

Give anything massive power and it'll post a half decent laptime though. The Cayenne they tested had something like 600bhp did it not? That it can keep pace with a 120bhp Elise is.... well, a given?

Did it? Like I say, I can't remember the specifics. On a track with a number of long straights though sure high bhp cars are going to have an advantage, but the West circuit isn't one of those tracks. Anyway, the 111R isn't 120bhp though is it and the Cayenne appears to have kept pace with that.

They are a very good SUV comparable with most of the other SUV's in the marketplace. They are well built, nice to drive on the road, which lets face it is where most of them stay, and reliable in the main, from what I am told. Aesthetics are an "up to you" decision, so no point debating those, and to talk about their ability off road is more often than not totally irrelevant, as most will go nowhere near anything more than a puddle. They suffer all of the weaknesses of most SUV's, being big, not great on fuel, not easy to park in small places and generally getting more and more despised by J Public due to their tabloid driven view of the world, but offer the benefits of most SUV's being big, plenty of space, high driving position, good all round ability.

There are cars that do some bits better, more pace, more space, better fuel consumption etc, but as a whole they are good cars that do what you would expect a good SUV to do, with a little more style in my opinion than most. If it were my money I would probably go the X5 route, but either are good cars at doing what they are designed to do, even though that may grind with some people.

Many of their benefits will be subjective and may not be seen by some as sensbile, but to say there is no point to them is short sighted I would suggest.

Funnily enough the Cayenne review on Top Gear is on now on uktv g2

edit: Over now, but seems it's actually a very decent car off road too, but rubbish practicality. Seems unless you get the turbo it's a bit pointless getting one as it'll be slow and better cars for the money, unless you're desperate for a very ugly car with a porsche badge of course!

Who in their right mind would have those 3 cars in the same shortlist?

'Hmmm, what should I buy, a 3 door hatchback, a 2 door Corsa Coupe or a People carrier with 7 seats and sliding doors'

He goes by looks :p Hence the Cayenne :)

Regarding the Cayman confusion - no, its like that other poster said, he thinks that everyone has a 911 (most of which are Boxsters), hence he wants to be different (hes never heard of a Cayman).

I asked him about the Cayenne, and the reasons for wanting one are: Porsche, a Porsche that not everyone has, V8, its big and sturdy hence safe, and the "curves".

What can I say, he likes Cayennes, I like Mustangs, my old uni tutorer likes Skylines. In the end of the day, its all subjective :) What I was really looking for are comments about how it drives and parks and general opinions on it by people who have driven it, there were a few good posts on this.

He sounds like a dreamer. Anyone who is considering either a Chrysler Voyager or a Vauxhall Tigra clearly knows nothing about cars and has no real intention of buying, but is full of hot air :)

Regardless of whether this guy is a dreamer or whatever, if he has to have an SUV, I'd recommend a RR or RRsport in an instant over the Cayenne, purely because it doesn't look like a frog.

Carmela Soprano drives a Porsche Cayenne. Do he want to be classed as a girl?
A mans SUV is a Bowler Wildcat. Not a poncy wannabe offroader.
