They are a very good SUV comparable with most of the other SUV's in the marketplace. They are well built, nice to drive on the road, which lets face it is where most of them stay, and reliable in the main, from what I am told. Aesthetics are an "up to you" decision, so no point debating those, and to talk about their ability off road is more often than not totally irrelevant, as most will go nowhere near anything more than a puddle. They suffer all of the weaknesses of most SUV's, being big, not great on fuel, not easy to park in small places and generally getting more and more despised by J Public due to their tabloid driven view of the world, but offer the benefits of most SUV's being big, plenty of space, high driving position, good all round ability.
There are cars that do some bits better, more pace, more space, better fuel consumption etc, but as a whole they are good cars that do what you would expect a good SUV to do, with a little more style in my opinion than most. If it were my money I would probably go the X5 route, but either are good cars at doing what they are designed to do, even though that may grind with some people.
Many of their benefits will be subjective and may not be seen by some as sensbile, but to say there is no point to them is short sighted I would suggest.
