Vista 32 or 64?

32-bit has more support, is more compatible, supports 16-bit legacy programs, and doesn't force you to use certified drivers whether you want to or not. But won't fully utilise 4Gb (the max you'll get depends on your hardware, it's usually circa 3Gb) whereas 64-bit will.

64-bit seems to be the popular choice round here, but I think 32-bit is the better choice for most people.

I'm in the same boat 64bit or 32bit I have got xp pro 64bit on at the moe and its been hard work getting all the drivers, for things like camera's, dig TV tuning card and some other stuff.
I think I will try 32bit vista first see how it goes if its worth upgrading to 64 then I'll just pop the vista disk in and rebuild using the 64bit version.

Thats easy if you have the Retail version.

You'll need to get a second disk - Ultimate Retail comes with both. Other retail comes with 32-bit, and you have to send off ~£8 for a 64-bit disc. Installing the other with OEM is allowable, but there's no easy way to get hold of the disc short of borrowing it.

I can say from someone that had 2gb. Its sufficient. Not great, but it does the job. With games and apps the like.

BUT

Im getting another 2gb tommorow, just to make it run that little bit sweeter :)

Also I have the 64-bit version, and its great...

Well i can say from someone that has 2GB, my system runs flawlessely, very fast and no slow downs what so ever.

64bit

There is just no real reason to go for 32bit. To say hardware compatability is still a problem now just isn't true.

If the hardware is recent and any good, there are 64bit drivers out for it.

You sure you running the same vista as i am? :P

Go for the 64-bit version, future proofing and all, plus drivers etc are generally fine, unless you make music as i do, you're out in the cold on a lot of things then, at least got my keyboard working now but audio interface, software etc doesn't work.

Vista has horribly memory management to be honest, kinda sad.

I've got 1.5Gb RAM, and it flies on mine. It really can depend on chipsets and driver combinations - I've had it run far better on an Athlon XP 2400+ system than on an Athlon64 3500+ system with more RAM - which makes no sense at all.

Really? It's far better than XP's.

What on earth are you talking about, its by far much better than XP. Memory is their to be used and that is exactly what Vista does, if a program needs it, Vista will happily give it out.

People way over exagerate things.

despite what people say, there are still driver issues with the x64. I am having serious issues my self. ALso there is a hugh lack atm of 64-bit wireless netwroking routers and adaptors.

64-bit router?!

I've run Vista x64 with an old Linksys Wi-Fi card and with a newer onboard solution on an Asus Board. Both worked fine.

There is still likely to be some driver issues for x64 - your best bet is to buy branded hardware. Cheap OEM's aren't likely to bother investing in supporting their products - but, as they say, you get what you pay for!

64bit al the way, no trouble with drivers very stable very fast(better than xp). I only have 2GB ram, no troubles even when gaming.

The only thing people say get 32bit is due to 16bit legacy, but come on. WHo owns anything that is 16bit?

Vista x64 ,I have no problems with Vista x64 drivers even for my usb bluetooth and other devices,I use a Belkin N1 wireless router(wired) and wireless for my XP,I prefer wired for gaming, you can find wireless NICs that have Vista x64 support if you really need too.

Btw I have a lot of 32 bit software and games that all work fine in my Vista x64,why bother with Vista x68 unless you need 16 bit support or don't have 64 bit hardware/drivers.

Btw what did the other guy mean by 64 bit router?....no such thing, long as you have drivers for your NIC (network card)regardless of wired or wireless it'll work fine.

I want to go with the 64-Bit option but I'm having problems installing the ******* program. I've got the well known 'CD/DVD device driver is missing' error which means I'm ******* :(
