40Gb PS3 listed on UK website

I for one am very happy about this new model and price, I'd rather save the money on the console ( you can buy a usb hub which is much more discreet than a whole series of leads coming from the ps3, the same for a card reader and wifi is included ) and spend the money on games and the new tivo add on ( gadget freak its a must buy for me ).

BC means more to some than others, for me I buy a next gen console for next gen games, and for the previous mentioned theory that most ps3 owners previously owned a ps2 well I didn't, I was a pure pc gamer.

More to the point, more ps3 owners means more power for sony to secure better games support from third party publishers. Also anyone wishing for sony's obliteration this gen and MS to dominate are missing the point that it is not healthy for consumers, it strangles creativity and makes the platform holder lazy ( i.e sony after the PS2 era which I didn't like about last gen it was too one sided ).

So, who will buy one of these new rev PS3?
I for one will if they are no more than £299 of maybe £350 if I can get F1 and RFOM as part of the bundle.
I never thought I would see the day that I would drop PC gaming for a console let alone also owning two consoles.

I think it's all down to HD. I certainly wouldn't have entertained these consoles if they were still chucking out 576i which is why the Wii is a non-starter for me.

Of course I see they are getting a Blu-Ray player, but that's only because Sony made all games on Blu-Ray discs to try and make the new primary format Blu-Ray.

When I buy a games console I want games first. Anything else is a bonus, but my primary reason for a games console is only for games. Also, I've see the Samsung BR player several times in the past for £250.

Thats you and your reasons, people mostly bought the X360 for its games too. However the PS3 is still the best allround Blu Ray player available even performing better than many stand alone players costing £700. Dont forget with PS3 its as much the other way round for movie fans. They wont be too bothered about the games at all but damn a Blu Ray and games console for £299 mmm its seriously good value. If Sony would only sort out the XMB for personal folder creation and filing then id quickly dump in a massive harddrive and use it as a HTPC device full of all my entertainment. Lets hope a firmware update allows more folder options in the future.

As an example for Blu Ray performance my friend imported the top of the range latest Pioneer Elite Blu Ray player. Nice machine but like many standalone players shame it takes about 2 mins to turn on and actually begin playing a disc. On PS3 its seconds. PS3 only downside at the moment is for the few that require MA audio.

Software emulation is quite simply rubbish (look at 360 emulation, or the PS2's PS1 emulation), it's hardly worth bothering with.

You can pick up a PS2 for £90 brand new and will be able to for a few years yet, but then again who doesn't already have a PS2? if you're buying a PS3 it's pretty much a guarantee that you've had a PS2 before it.

But if you have a ps3 then it should be compatible in some fashion (I said the same about the X360 on launch not emulating Xbox games)

You can still play the majority of Windows games even on a new os - why should consoles be worse compatability wise?

I have had a ps2 - but havent had one for a while, and really dont want yet another box and power/video/audio cables to go with it, it just gets ridiculous

If there is no relationship between prior models and its only the name thats the same - its pointless keeping the name (from a gamers point of view - obviously not from a marketing aspect) it might as well be the Sony Home Hub or some tosh, ya know?

Just my thoughts really - :D

Quoted for truth - and bold type is exactly my thoughts

Sort of glad they didnt rush this part, but it needs to be worked on rapidly if it isnt already.

IF Sony want the PS3 to become a hugely successful media centre in its own right then I believe this is the most necessary step.

Dont get me wrong Mr Latte - I would really love the DTS MA decoding also (or option to force the amp to do it) but this is going to be a limited application at best for some time for most users wouldnt you agree?

When the other SKU comes out I may well import a US one so that I can actually watch all US BR's instead of just the "few" that are not region locked.

I really wish people would stop saying the PS3 has no games out, here's a quick list from a UK retailer, there may be more available than this

Armored Core 4
Blazing Angels

Colin McRae - DIRT
Conan

Def Jam Icon
Enchanted Arms
Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer
FEAR - First Encounter Assault and Reconnaissance
FIFA 08

Formula One - Championship Edition
Full Auto 2 - Battlelines
Genji - Days Of The Blade
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Heavenly Sword
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Mobile Suit Gundam - Target In Sight
Motorstorm
Nascar 2008 - Chase for the Cup
NBA 2K7
NBA Street Home Court
Need for Speed Carbon
NHL 08
NHL 2K7

Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Pirates of the Caribbean 3
Rainbow Six Vegas
Ratatouille

Ridge Racer 7
SEGA Rally

Sonic the Hedgehog
Spiderman - The Movie 3
Stuntman - Ignition
Surfs Up
The Darkness

The Elder Scrolls - Oblivion

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007
Tom Clancys Ghost Recon 3 - Advanced Warfighter 2
Tom Clancys Splinter Cell Double Agent
Tony Hawks Project 8
Transformers - The Game

Untold Legends - Dark Kingdom

Not to mention all the games you can get on PSN...

Only problem with them games is I can get 90% of them on the 360 so I really need more exclusive games to folk out £300-400 for the PS3

I aint a fanboy but spending 400 notes on a console that has a lack luster catalogue of AAA titles is silly to me, I got a 360 because of its line up and XBL and very happy with it but if I got a PS3 I wouldnt be as happy games wise, blu-ray would be nice but I dont want to start buying blu-ray titles just yet.

299 is a reasonable price point but having no BC rules it out for me.

I don't know about everyone else but I'd be buying it for BC (FF10, 12, MGS3 etc) and future potential if I eventually get a PS3.

Anyone else thinking if the PS3 was able to play copied games then it'll sell a lot more?, not being funny or anything but with its two rivals easily being able to play copied games then why would people buy a PS3. Take for example the dreamcast, only untill it was dead in the water did sales massively spike for the machine one it was able to play backups but all was to little to late.

There will be BC on the PAL ones. By no BC Sony mean software emulation instead of hardware emulation, which has always been thr case outside of USA and Japan.

I have no doubt you will be able to play old MGS and FF games on the new £299 PS3.

Xbox 360 requires a firmware hack to the DVDROM for it to be able to play copied games.
Do that to an Xbox 360, play the games online and then watch MS permantley ban the hacked console from Xbox Live.
XBL is what Xbox 360 gaming experience is all about imo and I for one, wouldn't want mine banned from online play.

Thats not the point i was making, there is hell of a lot of people that do not go online or couldn't care less about it, can get cheap games and just play them, just like with the Ds and PSP, PS. To some extent piracy does sell systems, well i think so anyway

Yes your right, even the PS2 was not selling that great until the first modchip appeared and the sales caused a UK drought of the console

Piracy has been known to boost sales of console but people still need to be legit and buy games or developers will just give up and go bust.

Thing is there is only nintendo making a profit when somebody buys either of the modern consoles and modchips it..
Sony dont really want to go and sell aload of consoles at LOSS to aload of modders do they? its only going to hurt them..

Not everyone has a 360, so for the 100th time... If you have ONLY a PS3 there are plenty of games.
