World War 2 Memorial destroyed

The only thing I was taught at secondary school (grammar!) was from 1900+
As much as we should know about the war etc, I really don't think its right to spend 2 whole years studying the Cold War, WW1 and WW2. What about 'old' history, like the Roman Empire etc? :(

World War 2 should be covered in so much detail that you cry when you leave the class room, you need to know why you have what you have and why we need to remember, because if we dont, they'll be forgotten and that'll be a very sad day.

Yeah I guess it's true, nobody really knows what our country would be like if we lost the war, could have been better for all we know. Nevertheless I still have the utmost respect for those that fought for us in the wars.

I don't get people like you. (No offence :))

You're saying that "oooh WW soldiers were hereos, we should never forget them!".... What about the billions of other people that have fought in wars over the last 1000s of years?

Sparta is not amused!

edit: Yes, WWII soldiers were heroes and shouldn't be forgotten, and nor should WW1, Cold War, Viking and Roman soldiers....

Was there anything bigger than WW2? Was there anything bloodier? WW2 had an impact on the entire world.

The time of Caesar and Genghis Kahn are pretty big but you learn them in lower years :)

Bigger in what respect?
Number of deaths, what people got out of it.... what?

In my completely honest opinion, the greatest war is the one where people learn the most from, both in gaining Allies, technology, medicine etc.

No war should be called great because the most people died... that's just wrong.

WW2 like people said changed the entire world, it effected every single person on this planet, because you can go down the street and see an old lady who's husband died to save us, because you can go across the border and see the gas chambers where 100-100,000 died, because you can go on the internet and find out how many of your familly died to save you and your future.

Lol

Biggest as in:

The amount of manpower
The number of countries invovled
The amount of people it affected(the world.)

How our heroic soldiers did what they had to do, what they went through and people should be taught to recognise it :)

Meh, my opinion anyway

And I'm sure 50 years ago you could go down the street and see an old lady whose husband died in WW1, my point is, just because 100,000s died, it doesn't make it great, unless your hitler...

And haven't peoples families died to save this country in other wars?
Just because its the most recent..

Your not thinking about your great x50 grandad that died trying to save the world from Romans etc... see my point?

"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'

This:

I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this Government: 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.' We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us: to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

Because past or future you never had men and women who gave so much for so little.

Roman conquest didnt involve nearly the amount of people as WW2 did. WW2 was truly a global war.

Roman conquest affected north africa and europe- eurasia slightly iirc. but WW2 effected everyone. (minus switzerland, bang in the middle helping everyone out :p )

I dont know about you but im bloody grateful for the way in which we live today thanks to those brave men who fought for our freedom. The statue is a symbol of remembrance.

I wish we really could bring back corporal punishment and abolish the right for kids to play the "human rights" card when beaten to a pulp for being a wee ****.

Its a shame we dont have politicians with the ability to grab everyones attention and build them up, such as Sir Winston Churchill and dare i say it Hitler... crazy as he was, he was a fantastic public speaker.

If it weren't for the Nazi's, we certainly wouldn't have the technology as we did today. Wars advance technology by several factors.

Completely agree..

Goodnight then: sleep to gather strength for the morning. For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn. Vive la France! Long live also the forward march of the common people in all the lands towards their just and true inheritance, and towards the broader and fuller age.

Just goes to show that in them times during the war you had no rich or poor devide, everyone was equal, everyone was united.

If the nazis has won a lot of us here today might not have been, what with their drive for racial purity of blonde and blue eyes. What happened to the jews in the 30's would have started here again if they had managed to win the war and invade Britain, theres enough plans showing that this was going to happen here in time if they had won.

I lost my grandfather during WW2 and never got to meet him, i for one will make sure any children i have know about the sacrifices in any war we have fought in. So they understand that at one point or another we have to stand up and say no more.

what with their drive for racial purity of blonde and blue eyes.

Is there any proof that Hitler would have started to eradicate all non blonde/blue eyed people?

If you were a jew, gay or had physical or mental problems on the other hand..I think also blacks.
