Air cooler for Q6600

the reason i haven't bought a Thermalright Ultra Extreme yet is because people say it may not have a flat base.

is the 1c difference between Tuniq Tower and Ultra Extreme worth the gamble and get the Extreme?

mine came and it was pefectly flat and easy to install it works a dream

I think the point wuyanxu was making is that they all don't come with flat bases.

Anandtech believe that the base should not be flat:
The Thermalright designs do use the convex (bowed) base plate which has been shown to increase cooling by 2C to 3C….

Make of that what you will.

yes that's what i meant. seeing so many people lap the thing.

but does it need lapping? almost all people say that after lapping their Extreme, they get a temp drop.

(still holding my cash on the Extreme....... i don't have the time/space to do a lapping of a HSF

Another vote for this beast ! Just setup my q6600 with it - running passive and its sat at 37 across all cores idle :)

I might whack on the 120mm fan if I o/c it a bit more - not done much as yet !

mines doing 40, 43, 40, 40 all cores idle with the fan + system fans + the side of the case off!

Bare in mind that mines not a G0 - tis a B3 so runs hotter anyways ...

Now that i've o/c's it to 3.2 its thumping out some more heat - idles nearer 40 odd per core at times and goes up to 60 ish when gaming - not tried stressing it majorly yet tho :o

I still think the tuniq is better value as it comes with it's own fan and controller you have to buy a fan for the thermalright which bumps it's price up delivered.

i think you're confused. mines a G0, yours is a B3. we're both using the same HSF.

at stock and Idle, mine is doing 40.75C.

yours is doing 37C Idle (3.75C less) at stock, and naturally produces more heat.

hows that fair?

Im using the Zalman 9700 LED with my Q6600, got it clocked to 3.6ghz with 1.456v.

Its pretty damn loud when it gets going and my temps are usually around 75c after a few hours of small fft's in Orthos.

I cant say that im all that pleased with it really, the temps dont worry me that much (i havent let the AS5 cure yet) but the noise does get on my ****.

I wouldnt mind an alternative, my only restriction is height, i've got around 10mm clearance from my case fan.

Ive got the Tuniq Tower with a Q6600 clocked at 3.3ghz.... temps on full load (Prime95) are 57-59ish on high, which is quite loud but more than tolerable, and aboout 64-65 on low, which is all but silent.

Overall im very pleased with my temps as in games I get no higher than 42-43 C with the fan on high and only slightly higher with the fan on medium.

If your case is big enough, I dont see how you can go wrong with the tuniq tower.

Yea that sounds right, I did re-read it afterwards and figured it didn't make sense :p

I've got mine up to 3Ghz stable - 3.2 was stable in windows but CoH would hang after a while and orthos crashed windows - need to play with meh settings!

Still I've got the side off mine and the noctua has the 120mm fan sat ontop of it as well as another 120mm fan blowing air in over it just nextdoor so not bad airflow wise!
