DX10 ATI vs NVidia gaming benchmarks

Does anyone know if the awful DX10 performance is just down to drivers? Or does it go deeper?

cheers

Si

it goes deep down right into the architecture. 2900 is just a glorified x1900.
when you take the lid off the 2900 its still a 16pipe card, and 16pipes won't get you very far in this day and age.

Rubbish!

Its down to the drivers fullstop. The 320 shaders of the R600 have to be optimised to keep the data flowing. As its superscalar, unlike the G80 which is a scalar design, its needs data through put to perform. At the moment this is only mainly happening in 3D Mark. BUt further down the road performance will still increase, especially when games only use shader AA.

The 8800GTS still has 20 pipes, the GTX has 24 pipes, just like the 7800 GT and GTX. Does this mean the 8800 is just a gloryfied 7800? No it doesn't, like it doesn't mean the 2900 is a gloryfied X1900.

Yes the 8800 GTS performs better then the 2900 XT is some things and the same holds true the other way round.

I only bought the 2900 pro as its price/performance is excellent. Otherwise I'd of got a GTS 640Mb.

if thats the case don't get your hopes up, ati's driver support is useless, they abandoned the x19 series cards now and don't even support agp cards. by the time thier next generation cards come out they will drop support for the 2900 and then you gonna be sitting around crying your eyes out with no clue as to what do next.

sounds like the netburst architecture, runs on high clocks, pulls out high heat, and sucks up silly power which in return gives you poor performance.
and we all know what happened to netburst. ;)

if it wasn;t for AMD bailing out ati now they would have gone bust on this one massive failure of a card alone.

Apologies to the guy that asked for a link about nvidia having the dx10 spec changed. I had a 2 min look as going to bed, but couldn't find the article. It was something about virtualisation I seem to remember, might have been on beyond3D, but can't remember as it was a fair few months ago.

Will, you mentioned some about the stuttering in a game with your x2900xt. Is that present in all games? Will can you also take a 2nd look at those benches (all of the pages), and not just focus on the xt being naff element. I can see some really wierd results going on in there, even with regard to the g80 stuff. I try to stay impartial, but if I think something gets a slateing when undeserved I speak up. I am a technology fan not a ati fanboy. Nvidia clearly does the better top end (that I can't afford without my wife leaving me ), but calling the card awful names is a bit much. It don't have feelings lol.

What are your impressions of the image quality, as that would concern me more than overall fps personally, unless all i did was twitch game.

Matthew

Image quality is fine, I'll probs get flamed for this, but when I had a GTS the image quality was better, god everyone will be flaming me now I can see it.

Stuttering happenes in Crysis, GTA SA, Sega Rally XP/VISTA.

I notice Shaders/Shadows kills the 2900 big time, in Crysis at 1680x1050 no aa everything apart from shaders/shadows high I was getting about 30-70fps, shaders on medium, shadows on low.
