Autocar's Tyres Test 2007

Nangkings were so s*** they didn't even make the shortlist. People shouldn't skimp - that tiny patch of rubber could save your life or the life of someone else.

I've got Nankang NS-2 on the front of mine.

Superb grip in the dry, really good for the money. Wet grip is pretty shocking though. It's actually quite entertaining trying to keep the car on the road :p

Will be getting something tasty when I have some money. Nankang's can go on the rear.

Nankang's can go on the rear.

Current thinking from accident investigators is that you should not have less grip at the rear even if you have a FWD car. Apparently, a lot accidents are caused by loss of control due to the car 'fishtailing'. If you've even seen a motorway pile up in action, when cars 'fishtail' out of control due to a high speed swerve(s), you'll know what I mean.

Agree totally.

The NS2's aren't THAT bad thought, I don't expect them to just snap and let go... and I'm pretty cautious in the wet anyhow.

I'll see how they do. If the back end does snap out or perform unexpectedly, they'll be coming off don't worry :)

P.S. People who swerve are n00bs. Brake hard if you need to while assessing the situation and then move out of the way if you have to. If you find yourself in the position where you have to swerve hard enough to upset the balance of the car, you were too close anyway.

hm ive never had the back end snap out on my car in any circumstance, ive lost traction at the front pretty easy but it is a saloon, not a lightweight hatchback so maybe tht has something to do with the better stability?

I totally agree. It amazes me the amount of people who try and kid themselves that the Nankangwanglisuperduper's they bought for 25p are not that bad, really.

bleh only 6 tyres tested?

Would like to see a larger test with some other decent tyres in like the falken 452's.

The 452's are poop compared to the F1's. Really, really, really wish i'd taken £10-20 on the chin and got F1's up front :(

However, had just bought the rims and the 452's were *supposed* to be a good alternative.

What about Nankang's?
I'd rather walk than have them on my car.

The only excuse for having them on your car is that you bought the rims and they came with them free, and even then they only stay between your home and the tyre place :)

I crashed my car by aquaplaning into a kerb in the pouring rain......car was fitted with PS2's.

No tyre is going to save you from bad driving :D

Thought that Autocar test was interesting, not least because some of tyres perform better on RWD cars than FWD cars. Also the effectiveness of tyres degrade with age - quite significantly in some cases (see the Evo article). I bought some 17s off eBay a while ago, and they came with some P7s and although they *looked* okay, the bloke said that they'd been in his garage for a few months, so I bought replaced all 4 corners.

Had NS-2's on my MK1 and for dry grip they were just slightly behind the Yoko prada's which were very good.

Both were bad in the wet,but tend to be careful in the wet anyway

I'm glad you think its funny to have 3 completely different brands of tyres fitted to your car, including one ultra weird brand, but I think you might stop laughing if you knew the effect it has on your cars handling.

Think its time for some new wheels managed a complete spin yesterday at 20 odd mile an hour with the hand brake :p

EcoContact 3 165/70 R13 79T x4 with fitting only £131 \o/

yea the luck ive had with punctures and stuff isnt funny. Even one of my rears has had a puncture that i had to get repaired:/ still running that tyre.

this is why i want some new front rubber as currently the situation is less than ideal in the wet.

In the dry it doesnt matter because my car can hold a lot of latergal G's anyway:)
