Just as a test, download Netstumbler. Install and run it. See if that detects any nearby wireless networks. If it doesn't, then I suggest fully removing all software/drivers assoiated with the card and trying some different drivers.

ok i will try this and report back, i had a look for drivers and there are not many available for this wifi adapter, maybe worth getting a cardbus wifi adapter for the laptop if i dont have any joy.

I had an odd issue ages ago whereby I had to type the whole key in full 128bit, rather than the ascii version of it. Have you selected the option to type the ascii key in?

What encryption is being used? Have you tried turning it all off? Have you enabled mac filtering?

I agree that no networks visble suggest wrong drivers or conflict between XP wireless config program and a manufacturers utility. Some chance also that one or more of the properties of the adapter have been set to something such as radio off.

i dont know what the ascii version of the key is im puzzled, any idea where i select the option to type in the ascii key, the security is wep, i have not tried turning the security off, where will the mac filtering setting be ?

i will try your suggestions later when i can get to use her laptop, thanks for the help mate

ok i wll look into this and try other drivers too although not many versions are available, where will the radio off setting likely to be ?

ok i have no luck and tried everything that has been suggested, i have tried various drivers and still no luck, i disabled the built in wireless adapter and plugged in my d-link usb adapter, downloaded the drivers from the windows update site and the adapter found my wireless network right away and connected with no problem.

so for some reason this poxy zydas adapter wont work in xp with the available drivers.

so it looks as though we need to buy a usb wireless adapter if she wants to use xp on her laptop, she has an express slot, is there such a thing as a cheap express wireless adapter as any i seen were expensive. or would it be cheaper buying a usb adapter which unfortunately will stick out a bit.
