Braking round corners

Correct me if im wrong but on standard cars, when you brake the wheels go straight.

Happened to me before its not fun, had to replace the whole front arm, the door panel was also bashed in.

Might have been going to slow for the ABS to work properly, depending on the speed sensors the ABS stops working below x speed and locks up the wheels.

My simple sugguestion is it happened because its french, Ive driven a 206 which did a pretty similar thing - but at a junction and I went strait out into a main road.

With Peugeots, you have to be nice with the brakes, and the car will be fine. Stomping on them will encourage it to lock up. Bearing that in mind, none of my cars have ever had ABS. :p Locked up the 205 the other day as the road was damp, and I was easing on the brakes, then needed some more and locked it...but that was at about 30-40mph.

Sounds unusual, no idea what the road is like but shouldnt really happen. Is this the 307 Hdi with the crap fuel economy? Might aswell be somthing else wrong with it.

The driving test's should be made more detailed me thinks

Yeah, they don't cover skidding much, I use my common sense, and just brake the correct amount to not skid, but to stop. Was messing around the other day when I locked up though, but I was on a straight, so it was in fact better.

My instructor was a good one, and he did explain when to brake, and everything for corners, and he used to get me to brake upto the corner then 'power out' ie. halfway round, put the power on. :D

Also covered the whole locking up etc., but not all that much. Only really covered it in Pass Plus.

Absolutely.

Technology has moved on, the test has'nt.

Same could be said for a lot in our road system tbh.

LGV C+E (Artic) driving test does not even include a full, loaded, emergency stop, never mind one on a corner which is truly scary if you think about it for a bit.....

Funny you should say that, becuase tonight before my 'near miss' it took about 5 times to start it and the engine was shaking badly! Getting my Focus back next week though so not bothered.

Have had a Vauxhall do the same, but that was because the ABS is set to cut in really early, favours controllability, rather than absolute stopping power.

You might want to look at how ABS works. In this case, either your ABS wasn't working correctly or you weren't steering in the right direction.

ABS can not defy the laws of physics, it won't miraculously kick in and give the tyres enough grip to stay perfectly on a line in a corner AND perform an emergency brake. If you are cornering and you suddenly load the wheels up by braking hard, the slip angle will increase considerably, ABS or no ABS. A completely locked wheel has no steering ability whatsoever, one that is being locked an unlocked at high speed by the ABS system has reduced ability to control the direction of the car, but gives the driver more control than if it were not there.

Like an early poster, I'm fairly dismayed that this thread even exists, and goes to reinforce just how woefully inadequate driver training and the driving test is.

If you are lucky. :D

I know this from experience in my civic! I braked VERY lightly round a wet corner and car just went "no mate" and continued into the wire fence curving round the corner!

No ABS, NO ASC+T = pray :p

No, just means brake hard before the corner and power on whilst cornering...just watch out for the back end. :D

My 306 never had ABS or anything, and I could boot the brakes and it'd stop sharpish with no lock...the 205 seems similar, but not as good.

Asc helps a lot with going round corners when the back end decides to swing out! a few times I've noticed it begin to go out then the asc light begins flashing and it swings back in again! :D DSC should be more fun though!

Never had driving aids, they are for wimps/people with money. :p

I know they are good and sensible...but I still like not having any of them and just knowing not to be a pillock...found out the hard way what you can do (should have photos of the result in my sig's 'my car' link).
