Mass Effect Review 9.75

Im actually hoping this does not win game of the year.... as I know its going to be amazing, that would mean there is an even better game released :)

Gonna be a kill-joy here.

Looks a stunning game, looks incredible, but next-gen for me isn't just graphics and sound. I DO want more than 30hrs gameplay, it's possible, several games have had that recently, even the ones that haven't scored very well.

18-30hrs just isn't good enough in my opinion.

Depends how you play - with rpgs i look around everywhere n do eveeryting, KoToR took me 38 hours

Games take me ages to go through because I love just chilling out and taking it slowly. Im not too phased. However, with the amount of side quests thats cramped into the game, it'll be longer than 30hrs.

1 month ago, people were giving Bioshock 9.5/10 10/10 scores and shouting "game of the year", "game of the decade" tags around. Don;t see anyone playing it on the 360 no more. (Note even in thee top 10 played titles on majornelson.com anymore)

I am reserving judgement as there seems to be a lot of unreasonably high scores being thrown around willy nilly for 360 games atm.

I do genuinely believe Bioshock to be one of the strongest games of the last decade, I did on my first play through and I still do now, however, even at its time of launch I said I predict Mass Effect or Bioshock to win it, probably Mass Effect. I still think that.

I see what you mean, but then again in my case I have a rubbish attention span and as much as I loved the days when FF7 took me 75hrs or more to see everything, I'd probably never find the time to do that again.
However for £40, it would be nice if it lasted a lot longer.
It's a tough one to call.

18-30 hours does seem 'short' but only because of the way they kept putting shots of the galaxy travel map in demo vids.

If it's 'just' 18-30 hours of gameplay I guess the majority of the planets won't be places you can travel too. Kind of misleading, was hoping for something truely epic.

Oh dear, can the original poster please edit the post. Its been said so many times its not 18-30 hours, this type of game encourages (almost forces) exploration and side quests so expect that number to increase.

Also note the high replayability of the game.

I would rather have 18 hours of engaging gameplay with a memorable experience at the end that double that where it loses interest or feels likeits just getting stretched out.

The developers have said that every single planet will be explorable, which is why I think the OP's statement of 18-30 hours is either way off the mark, or simply for the main quest only. Most RPG's take a bare minimum of 30 hours if you decide to do a fair amount of the sub quests, of which I'm sure there will be plenty.

9.75 sure sounds promising, peaked my interest a bit, gonna wait till I've read a few reviews more close to the release before I decide on getting it.

I just hope it ain't gonna be another bioshock and halo3 "10/10" bangwagon when it comes to the reviews.

I would definitely say Bioshock lived up to all the hype. It's a masterclass of a game in every department (bar multiplayer... obviously :p).

I'd agree there, although I never really noticed much of the hype :o It completely passed me by as usually I'm not a big FPS fan.
The main thing that made me want it was watching Davey_Pitch play the demo on a HDTV.

By about 3/4 hours it became very "samey"

I found the story enthralling, so much so I completed it in 3 sittings. It was brilliant.
If a game is not samey, people complain about consistency, if it is too samey people complain about that too. It's very hard these days. Personally, the fact that you had one final goal from the start to the end, whilst travelling through rapture, picking up little bits of the story along the way was just unbelievably good. It took story telling in a game to a whole new level and for me, it was the first time since Half-Life (1) that a game has.

Not sure if I want this or not. I wasn't keen on KOTOR (don't hit me) so not sure if I'm going to like this or not. Might rent it first to see how it goes.

It was just an off the cuff comment to be honest, never mentioned anrthing about ps3 or Lair or anything. You seem a bit defensive.

Looked at some video from gametrailers and the small bits of actual gameplay you see do look good. I will probably get this.

that is all.

Lol, you don't do you. I'm not sure where I got that notion from. Sorry bud.
