what is it with watches?

not always, how many folks would know what the one that I posted above was ?

from my point of view, that's what I really like about uber expensive watches - the lack of brand association gives it extra exclusivity.

Oh I agree entirely :) I don't think you could deny that certain brands seem to have extra £££s tacked on for the name though?

'Twas more of a general observation as well rather than specific to watches, you only have to see things like 'limited-edition' runs in fashion to see that exclusivity - huge draw to 'conspicuous consumers', and therefore price, is often controlled by companies to ensure they maximise profits!

took anew pic just for you seeing as I have put a new strap on it

oh and no I dont own a gold chain

Actually, that's quite a nice watch and more subtle than I was expecting. I wouldn't know that was 7k, but then I haven't worn a watch for years.

I wear all my watches for varous things, I went down the local last night in a 7+ grand watch and have been quad biking across deserts wearing a 2 grand one

they are to be worn, if anything happens to them then the insurance pays up

Good attitude to have IMO. I don't want to splash out on a nice watch because my current one is showing signs of my general clumsy nature (although I have had it 7 years) but a nice one for my 30th would be a nice gift.

*starts putting out hints to family well in advance* :p

This is the wost analagy ever. A Nissan Micra will NOT do the same job. The difference between a £50 and a £5000 watch is NOT the same, not anywhere near the same, as the difference between a £5000 and a £50000 car.

they both do the same in that both cars will get you from A to B in the same time and both watches will tell the time the same. whats wrong with my analagy?

I've never bothered with watches either, i just check the time on my phone instead. :)

I don't always wear my watch but even when I do I find I check the time using my phone out of habit :o

Odd as it sounds I just like wearing it even though it is just a bog standard cheapest model Seiko Kinetic :o

I haven't had a watch in years, and I'm always early or on time. I guess I can just tell the time by the position of the sun or something.

I would like a nice pocket watch, but other then that, I hate wearing any jewellery.

A watch denotes your status in life and your level of professionalism.

Can you imagine the embarrassment of being in a board meeting only to be seen taking the time from a watch costing a mere £500?

Your analogy is worthless, becuase using the same analogy a bus and a car are the same.

Cars are differentiated by the way in which they get you from A to B.

I genuinely can't imagine being seen by the board with a watch costing less than say £1500. The shame would be unspeakable.

:O Sit your hands to hide your shame sir!

no, because bus is a different type of transport. you are comparing chalk with cheese. its just about taste and how items make you feel.

some people have no passion or feeling for fast cars, any car will do the same job. its the same for watches, any watch will do so why spend £2000 on an expensive one.

i dont agree with either statement as i like both nice cars and nice watches i am just saying thats how it is.

Why are these expensive/designer(?) watches so crap at telling the time? Don't some lose about 4 seconds a day or something?

Forgive my ignorance, but is it the clockworkness that causes it? I don't think I've ever had a clockwork watch, maybe something with hands that used quartz or something... /shrug.

I would love a seamaster, but that's about the only thing I really like. Maybe that one Spie posted in his thread, but £11k on a watch is just comical, personally - especially if it can't even tell the time properly.

Just to point out - I don't consider 4 seconds a day to be a big problem. I just discovered why mechanical watches lose time over quartz/whatever. It's obvious.
Also, I'll never slate anyone for spending 5x their annual salary on a timepiece, if that's what they want to do with it.

I'm just a chimp, and I'd probably manage to break a nice watch on its first outing. Insurance aside, that would probably put me off owning another/wearing the replacement if I'm not going to be wearing it in a padded environment.

Please tell me you're joking? do men really look at watches and judge you on it, how do you judge people that don't wear watches?

People who don't wear watches?

I wouldn't even give them the time of day.

Unless of course their suit was worth in excess of £3000.
