Got no where else to go really as my line is only capable of a 512kB ADSL connection.

Firstly are these guys any good

and

Will I see an improvement on what I've got now (Tiscali 512k)

You'll find some love it and some hate it. TBH i've had it in umpteen different places and never had a major problem but then again I worked for them for 4 years so clearly I must be a fanboy and/or a liar ;)

YMMV

im on cable 20mb at the minute and its delightful. im only getting about 12MB mind (only! what a shocker ;)) very fast :)

I used Virgin Media while I was living in Stafford for a year, didn't have any major problems. Slight bit of downtime but speeds were consistent :)
That was on the 2mb package.

Nice price :D
I got mine under the 3 for £30 deal, that was the cheapest at the time last year :( Pity really as I didn't need the landline.

on 20mb too and get constant 2.4mbps downloads off good sources :)

actually, the fastest downstream you can get from virgins 20mb service is about 1.8mbps-2mbps off good sources :)

Virgin Media is probably the best/fastest provider in the UK at the moment. But beware if you plan to download a lot of stuff. Between the hours of 4pm and 12am, if you download more than 3gig, they will cap you down to 5mb (75% bandwidth loss) for 4 hours.

Lots of Stafford lads here i see.

Im on the 20mb package here in Stafford and love it. It was a free upgrade from 10mb.

Best ISP ive been with to date.

Im on 4mb. It is always at 4mb pritty much. But if i start downloading and go over 750mb after 4 it drops downto 2mb and it just never seems to go back up. Ive waited till 12:30 and it never went back up. It seems that once you hit 750 after 4 they will do it for a lot longer then 4 hours. Not impressed with that.

Ok so now I have placed the order

I am assuming that they will install the cable to the closest point on the ground floor. How do I get this up to my computer in the spare room upstairs. Will it be better to have the modem close to the 'box' and lay an ethernet cable or can I just extend the 'box' to the top floor using coax cable.

Please help...NooB here.

When the engineer arrives they will install it to which ever point you want... so if you want it upstairs just tell the engineer...

Yup :)
In Stafford I was in a ground floor room so I got them to install it by the window, but in Swansea I'm upstairs so just asked the guy to sort it out for upstairs. Didn't envy him though :p

Incorrect. I get 2400KB/sec near enough any time of day and it doesn't fluctuate. Many people I know get these kinds of speeds, although there are of course people in the more heavily populated areas that don't.

mine was has been great for the last 11 months get full speeds till it went down today so had to call CS which was around 25p per min but because the problem was at their end they would refund me the cost and now its back up and working :)

Contrary to what everyone else is saying in positive...

-Virgin Media are notorious for changing terms and conditions on customers. Most recent being a traffic shaping package being brought in across all tiers. Incidentally, said shaping now means that on the top tier you hit your quota and are throttled back after about 30 minutes full download speed

-Of late I've noticed packet loss and high ping times, not to mention horribly slow DNS lookups. Funny, when throttling has been brought in to provide network consistency to all customers.

-Telephone support is 25p per minute to India, something else that was phased in fairly recently.

-Have had multiple run ins with their billing department for overcharges, resulting in MANY lengthy (2hr+) phone calls getting bounced around every department up and down the country being hung up on, insulted, lied to and fobbed off. Had this happen on 2 separate issues - both VM's fault, both resulting in compensation after angry letters sent.
Took months to resolve, and by far is the most appalling customer "service" I've had to endure.

On the flip side, I know there are a lot of happy and content customers out there, but having been an ex-NTL customer since broadband began on cable I've watched the service get better under NTL then drop heavily under the VM buy out.

At the end of it depends on what you're using your connection for, but personally I wouldn't bother getting involved with VM. I'm regretting it, and can't wait to be shot of them when Be ADSL comes to my exchange.
