WD MyBook: £85
Icybox+500GB HDD: £100

Just wondering which would be better? The IcyBox enclosure + a 500GB drive or the western digital mybook?

I'd like to keep the thing on 24/7 so it'd need to keep itself cool & quiet.

Thanks,
Craig.

You still not got sorted out with a HDD.

Anyhow the WD dont have a fan in that range (so no fan noise)and I dont know if it gets really hot as I dont use it aside from backups.

Pretty much sorted now (my other thread was for the RAID part of my setup :)).

Just need to find a good external, it's between the 500gb MyBook and the 500GB+IcyBox at the moment :)

Is the 500GB range (WD MyBook) quite noisy? My brother has a 250GB and it's pretty noisy.

One of the benefits of the Icy Box + HDD (of your choice) is that if you want to use the HDD at a later time as an internel HDD, you can do so....:)

Well the only noise can be the actual HDD so depending on model/series but there is no added noise of a fan and also no added cooling if needed.

True, I guess all I need to look at with an enclosure is reliability and cooling, or with an external I'd need to find out the HDD model etc. to see if it's noisy...

I've read a lot of good things about the Icybox. My choice is between an AKASA P2 and the Icybox IDE/SATA eSATA, I'll probably go for the IcyBox :)

Thanks,
Craig.

I had an Akasa P2 and it broke within a couple of days. It really didn't feel very good quality and it was quite plasticky (is that even a word?). Judging by the photos i've seen and reviews i've read about the IcyBox range of enclosures, they look like they're much better quality.

I have an Icebox atm, the reason is that when it comes with all the other ports (Firewire 800..eSATA) it works out cheaper as an external hard drive when you put an internal one in. You can also replace the internal when you like.
