Found this VW Golf 1.9 GT TDi on Autotrader, looks a good deal to me ?

Unless you happen to live inside the grounds of Strangeways, I see no reason at all that a 25 year old can't reasonably insure higher insurance groups than that.

I'm 24 and only paying £660 on a group 17 car.

How many points/no claims bonus do you have?

I have 6 points and 2 years no claims

Bearing in mind that im under 25 and i cant go anything above group 11 insurance really

Why on earth not? I've had cars above Group 11 since I was 19. I was 22 when I first insured my Group 17 car - for under a grand a year.

6 points, but 4 years. Still 2 years should be enough to insure a higher group car than that. Also, don't take grouping as gospel for price, I've seen a number of times a higher group car costing less to insure than a lower group car.

Trust me iv been looking at cars to buy for about 6 months...the GT TDI 110 is just about managable on the insurance, anymore and it will break my budget and i will have to start sacrificing on buying the car.

Spend less on the car and don't buy a badge then?

I wouldn't want to pay more than about £5500 for a Mk4 golf (R32 excepted), and that would be a 130 or 150PS. And for one with the lowly 110PS diesel, less than that. Infact if you desparately want a golf rather than an alternative, get an older one for £3k less.

Yup

I was actually shocked, I was browsing some reviews earlier and looking at some Golf GTI's 2.0 8v

To find out the GTI 2.0 MK4 is only 0.4s faster than my 1.6

The 2.0 is only making 115BHP and a 0-60 of 10.2s

My 1.6 is makig 98BHP and a 0-60 of 10.6

So for the price you pay your basically buying the badge on these :o

So spend less on the car, you want to spend less on the car anyway becuase if you want a 2001 diesel car you don't need to be spending £7k.

yep it does. The badge and the fact its done low miles, which is why the price is high. If you are interested it in, you might be able to haggle but I don't see the dealer having any trouble selling it on.

The fact that its done 49K with full service history justify's the higher price i thought?

The fact that its done 8,000 miles a year would say to me that its only been used for short trips. Why in gods name would anyone by a diesel for 8,000 miles a year?

And no, it most definately doesn't justify the price.

Are you buying a car to drive or give you a warm fuzzy feeling of self worth as you see an odometer reading of 49k?

but low mileage means nothing will ever go wrong with it and that its been looked after

Not always the case but suggests not used a lot, which is good. Look on pistonheads. You might find better examples with less owners. Take your time looking until you are happy.

Go with Seats/Skoda. More for the money but same car.

Im looking for something built with quality, something that has a high re-sale value, at the end of the day im keeping it for 3 years which with the milage i do gives me around 36,000 miles business not including personal.

If i buy a car with 90k on the clock, by the time i get rid of it, its going to have 125-130k on the clock. Still quite high even on a VW diesel engine.

sorry, i was yanking your chain... i know what high mileage can mean, my own golf has gone past 170k and is a peach.

the mk4 in the autotrader link is over priced (it is a dealer afterall)

will you be doing enough miles to justify a diesel?
