Counter Strike: Source Lag on 8800GTX

Hey all,

I'm having major problems playing certain Counter Strike Source maps. Most maps I play with 140fps no problem, but a select few I get the most ridiculous lag/choppiness. My spec is Q6600, 8800GTX, 2GB Ram, running at 1920 x 1200.

The maps I have trouble with are de_nuke, de_inferno (which are both playable, but with a ridiculous amount of choppiness and lag), and the worst which is totally unplayable is cs_militia. I have tried different servers etc, but no luck.

I do get some logs in the console when I play these maps, however, I get some of these errors on other maps so I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it. I shall post them below to see if any of you guys can recognize anything.

Any help appreciated

Ok, I disabled the AA, and the problem 'seemed' to go away. I say seemed because I haven't played a proper game on it, I just went on a server by myself to see if it worked.

However, if this is the case, why is it I can have full 16XQCS AA on all other games, including Counter Strike Source, but with just these 3 maps it lags. Is it a problem with the card?

I noticed that turning AA back on and running fraps, I was getting 140fps on militia, however in certain parts of the map, when I looked a certain way, it dropped to 14fps. I guess this is why it is choppy - constantly changing from 140fps to 14fps.

On a side note, I also get this problem with the latest Sega Really Revo demo. I get 7fps on max AA. If I drop it to Off, I get like 55fps. I would still expect more fps than that after turning it off surely?

Even so, after spending this much on a card, I would expect to be able to have AA on. What is the problem?

By the way I am running Visa Premium 32bit.

Thanks for your help guys.

Well i get 10-30 fps constantly all on low @1024/768 (the spec in my sig is my Christmas build spec)

You should drop a hard drive and get 4gb of ram ;) Raid 0 doesn't help much in games appart from shorten loading time. Wont helpthe actual performance. Ram will help a lot though :) Specialy in crysis i would beleive.

Back on topic.

Seems rediculas that a game like css which is made to run on 3 year old hardware wont run properly with aa on the top end cards. i gues it must be driver imcompatibilities with the game. perhaps someone with an ati card can say. It could just be dx10 cards in genearl or the nvida drivers.

PLayed source on my 2900XT in vista and xp, with everything, and i mean everything on full. 16x AA etc. Works fine for hours on end. I would say drivers tbh mate. Ive seen some problems come about with the 8 series on source with the HDR, disable that then see what happens.

Matt.

Can anyone else vouch for that? I'm a bit concern if thats the case...... Sorry to go off topic, just needto know before buying my own rig v soon.

4GB Of RAM and a raptor? Good combo.

Edit:Ram will help performance a lot more than HD will, apart from a slight increase in loading times, what do u prefer, better visuals and play or faster loading? If possible get a raptor 4gb and a large hard disk for storage. I have a dual boot of vista and xp on my 74gb raptor and games on my 36gb.

Matt.

CS_Militia is the most demanding CSS map because it has full HDR enabled. Even so your system should eat up CSS for breakfast! My new build does (see spec) with everything pretty much turned up fall. First thing I did when I'd got everything up & running was to find a server playing CS_Militia & fire it up. I did this because it plaid very poorly on my old rig. It ran like a dream on the new one. You could try re-installing (if you haven't already). Also defrag your HD. They always recommend that on the Steampowered help pages. I'd also try this;

Verify integrity of game cache

1. Load Steam
2. From the My Games tab, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game cache files (GCF's) - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

Re-extract the Game Files

Once you have verified the integrity of your game cache files, you can make sure that your extracted game files are correct by navigating to your Steam user directory: ..\Steam\steamapps\[USER NAME]\ and either renaming or deleting your game folder.

Note: If you are playing a Singleplayer game and wish to keep your saved games, rename the game directory.

The next time you run the game, it will re-extract the files from your game cache files. If you wish to restore your saved games, copy the SAVE folder from your old game directory to your new one.

Thats a good idea do the stress test.

Wouldn't get a raptor as they are more expensive. Just hold off getting the second hd and see if you achualy need it. it will only affect the loading time of a map for example. or if you play oblivion when you start the game the world will load that bit faster. but 4gb of ram will make the game run a lot smoother. Also 4gb of ram will speed up loading times, not as much as raid 0 would but it will speed up loading times. A game like crysis will be a memory hog im sure and 4gb would really be a big help.

People keep talking about 4GB of RAM. Maybe for Crysis but it should'nt be needed for CSS. I only had 1GB on my old rig (AMD 3000 64-bit, GForce 6800LE) & it ran CSS fine with most things turned up to high (apart from CS_Militia, which ran like a dog because of the HDR I guess). A system like this guy has should eat up CSS with 2GB of RAM.
