Job Agencies

They are homes for people who have very little personal skills and cannot cut working with the general public for more than 10 minute bursts every 2 hours.
Add to that their unique matching abilities I would be very surprised if any of them could complete a 100 piece jigsaw puzzle.

i.e CV says, 1 year experience in fundamentals of SQL Server and will not relocate from Glasgow. Floods of emails arrive for senior team leader position in charge of 5 people based in Reading.

Do your own legwork, hit company sites directly, most have a portal to their recruitment pages.

I have done my own legwork for the past 18 months looking for stuff, if it was as simple as you put it I'd have a job right now. I live in a small industrial town full of factories, not a big city filled with high profile companies with websites.

Who said I had very little "personal skills"?

Go back to the main forum, read your title, then read my post. In that order.

So I was not having a go at you.

Point taken that you may not stay in a large city, but even the local driving instructor where I stay has a webby. So have you put your town into Yell and clicked around for 30 mins?

I posted and updated copy of my CV on Monster yesterday and have had 4 calls from agencies so far. Most of them don't even contact you back after the first call so I usually just tell them I'm not interested but I've got an interview through one of them tomorrow so I'll see how it goes before I give up on agencies completely.

Oh no no, I didnt think you were having a pop at me :) I was merely explaining I've tried, Sorry!

Regardless, methinks you should give the agency a wide berth if they will openly show contempt for those they are supposedly assisting into work.
Totally agree.

Whether you've had a job in the last 18 months or not, the way that she treated/spoke to you is totally unprofessional. She should have kept her views on your employment history to herself and if I were you I'd find a different agency to go through - if you need to go through an agency.

Shows how bad employment is around here, they are the only agency around with any credability by word of mouth, I'd hate to see the others!

Unlucky, hopefully you'll get to speak to a different person next time you visit.

Also, I'd advise going in regularly to check out their progress. It shows that you're serious about getting a job as opposed to just showing a vague interest.

Ye, Im planning to ring them if they havent rung me by friday, I need a job quicktime or Im not going to be paid in time to pay next months bills :(.

Maybe i am lucky, but they worked for me.

I signed up on cwjobs, put my CV up there and within 2 months i had an agency call me up to go for a job and i got it. I didn't apply, they came to me.

I don't like agencies either, i'm currently with a construction agency until I go to uni, but the only work they have is too far for me to travel without a car, and I fear the work will become rarer with winter.

Don't like them but sometimes a necessary evil to get you where you want to be. Don't trust them at all.

shame my work pays £14 an hour for me and i only see £8 :( damn thieves!

Does that mean that when you was going for that job it was advertised to you at the £14 but you only get £8 or was it advertised to you as the £8 rate? just to clear it up for myself as im supposed to have an interview through an agency.

You'll apply for a job via Reed/Totaljobs etc. Only for the recruitment firm to contact you and talk about something else instead - Call Centre Work

They don't care about you or your needs and will waste your time trying to SELL YOU a rubbish position that nobody in their right mind wants to do - Call Center Work

Why, why, why Oh why do they try and sell us crap.

They really are like car sales people.

Ever wondered why most are female in these job agencies?

They were unable to get anywhere in life so belittling you pretty much makes their day. Some of them even show off they make up to 30k but that is based on commission and probably sleeping with people, to top that it never gets higher and most stay in the lower salary region.

Never take it to heart people who belittle you, they either want to make you feel how they do or want to stop your potential. Either way don't go back to one there are other ways available.

I never EVER bother with agencies, unless they can guarantee me a job - the only reason I work through an agency now, is because I was very much guaranteed the job. Saying that, the downside is there are lot of fruitcakes in training ATM. :/

You'll probably hear this enough times to make you think "meh, they all say that" - but seriously, you WILL get a job and NEVER give up. Sometimes you just have to take boring jobs, and work your way up the ladder - very much what I am doing now.

I signed up to a few agencies and will never do it again. They didn't find anything remotely suitable and don't give a **** about you. It's all about the commission.

Apart from being barred from one job agency for supposedly being abusive to women (don't ask) I've always found them pretty good.

I'm working at the mo but fancy a change, applied for a couple of jobs and they've rung me, told me about the job and set me up for a couple of interviews. Can't complain.

I've found agencies are generally good for the odd bit of work.

However I was once rung up by an agency I had worked through and they needed me to do some work that week, I said I was busy, and they said "what are you doing this week then which means you can't work".

The cheek of it.

Agencies are good for temp work and thats it

I signed up on gamesindustry.biz and monster, and after about 20 minutes of signing up on both I started getting calls and emails

They email your cv to all the same companies which makes you look bad as it looks like your pestering the company (This was especially bad in my case as when I applied directly in the end, I later found I "had already applied through an agency" and not to contact them :( so obviously ruined chances with them). They dont care about you, they will try give you crap positions and glorify it until you think its a good idea. They will talk to you like your there friend, but again, they just think of the money in it for them. I got set up a job interview through one of them at a couple of days notice really far away so no time to book tickets other than the hugely expensive ones, or any time to research the company/role and prepare for the entrance exam. So, I just didnt turn up and told no one and made them look bad :) The role turned out to be, after further investigation, a totally naff role anyway

I just ignore them now, get left about 5 messages a day saying I have companies interested, but its never related to what i want to do

You'll be far better off applying to companies directly
