Just bought one of these bad boys and waiting for it to be delivered. The idea is to have this for Vistsa boot OS and all apps on a different drive.

anyone got one these ? are they really that much quicker ?

Unlikely to be any quicker than a spinning disk, I'd hazard a guess and say it'll feel noticably slower than a standard modern HDD, regardless of access times.

Not trying to ruin your thunder, but quite a few reviews said to have found them slower than normal disc use, I'd guess windows boot times would be faster but apart from that due to transfer rates i'd doubt they'd be faster. tbh any speed comparison would be bias due to windows reinstall.

i dunno about wasted purchase. I like to test new stuff to see how it will perform. If its crap I'll whack it in my XP laptop and use it there

i bought two 16gb ssd and am still waiting on royal mail from the 8th oct to deliver my raid card, my patience is like lol :D grrr.

I want to shout something, not nice.

I thought that it would be slower when a game ETC loads lots of data (large levels, textures etc) into memory (slow sustained date rate) but once every thing has been loaded then there would be no stutter etc as the game repeatedly accesses small amount of data (quick access times) is this pretty much the case? im drunk

Ssd would be faster anyway because it has better access times, because the access times are much lower it actually transfers data to the cpu faster than a normal hdd does when loading applications. As there are many pieces of data spread over the disk that need to be accessed. You can infer this because raid 0 gives no loading time improvements whatsoever even though the max throughput is doubled.

So it is definatley not a wasted purchase where loading times are concerned. Though of course encoding and data transfers will suffer.

As you can see here the ssd drive just beats the 150GB raptor, however ssd drives have improved a lot since then.

As you can see here.

There is still major room for improvement as well. With ram having access times of under 1 nanosecond there is always lower latencies to aim for. :D I think by 2009 ssd will become a worthy competitor to hard drives in terms of price.

got mine today, formats as 8gb ??!?! not 16 ! all stickers suggest 16gb but I'll check it again when I get home

heheh, panic over....there were 2 8gb partitions on there, just formatted, will try and get vista on it tonight !

got it all working now and I have to say its fast. moved the pagefile over to another drive and all my apps and after windows update I have about 4-5gb left on it.

The write speed does leave a lot to be desired, when your installing an app and you minimise a window it can take a second to catch up but once the app is installed the loading time of it is fantastic.

I guess the speed isn't really what Im impressed by, its the noise, or lack of it. When your used to 2 raptors going at it in raid 0, silence is bliss !

I've been thinking about one of these for my own system. Would you say it was a good investment for an OS drive or think the raptor is better for the money?
