Hit the big 30!

So today I hit 30 years of age.
And I feel i've not really achieved much :(
Still living with the parents, holding down a 13.5K per year job. (university education doesn't gaurantee hugely paid job)

meh.

Oh geez.. 30? and you're still alive??? cheer up man i'm not near that age yet but i don't think i'd be that bothered.. its the media hype of 'being young' . hyped by 30somethings who're smart enough to make money from it ;) whats the age obession about anyhow? You still got another 10-15yrs to make some drastic changes..

I love how people think if you go to uni you are going to be paid loads, if you do a crap uni course you wont get paid lots.

Sorry to say this but uni is what you make of it.

Happy birthday

Did'nt go to uni, basic college and private courses.. make a fair bit still + debt free :D work with some peeps who're still paying off uni debts at 26+ and i make more than them..

Regarding job change, I work in wildlife rehab. Not well paid at all. But i'd miss it if I gave it up

im very much an animal person and that sounds a very rewarding job? especially seeing the animals released in good health again etc? unfortunately working with animals isnt the greatest pay in the world but who cares if you enjoy it?

happy birthday :)

In the last few weeks i've become really target motivated- I used to just be a drifter, taking all the luck that came to me, but im going to make a go of things now and try to change.

You'll feel the same way eventually, if you decide you want to change that is

There are loads of 20K jobs around, just apply to 50 or so that you are INTERESTED in and you'll prob get loads of offers.

I found my perfect job recently, and although its a terrible 18K (In london!) I think it's a good starting point for me in this particular industry. My goal right now is to get promoted in the fastest time ever seen by the company (6 months is about the fastest you can do it right now) and that will increase the salary to 22-23K (although I'll ask for 25K since I turned down a 25K job for this one). My long term goal is to live as centrally as you can get in London. Basically in an apartment near Oxford street... one day it's gonna happen, i hope lol.

he did a good course

btw, I know someone who's nearing his age and is also living at home, but UNEMPLOYED... he seems to have given up on any sort of goal setting

Paying of debts at 26+... sure, most of us are still going to be doing that... but it's only 11 grand of debt, which reduces by a grand a year average, depending on salary... I guess I'll be debt free at 27 (im 22 now)... I have friends who'll be debt free in about 4 years time.

Fact is though, its my chosen fields that help a lot. IT and Electrical testing and inspection, did'nt go to uni for either one but on a good month with some over time i can clear close to 3k after tax and with some private jobs added i can clear 5-6k a month;)

No offense mate, happy birthday and all - but you've made me feel a lot better about myself. Just turned 20, looking for a job still to pass the time until I go university next September. I thought I had it bad.

I didn't really have an interest in a lot of grad schemes that paid well, and also didn't have a choice due to a lot of high paying jobs requiring 2.1s. I took this stupidly low paid job as it's something I'm actually remotely interested in, like I said, I got offered a 25K job too, which is reasonable for London however I felt long term, the one I took is what I want to be doing.

I applied to things like Hedge Funds, accountancy, market research etc, anything that accepted a 2.2 and after constant rejections I finally got this search engine optimisation job.

and btw, London wise, something inside of me just desparately wanted to move there no matter the salary. Turning down a 35K job in london is impressive though- you could be living the good life, just eating chinese buffets everyday down Soho... ahh, cant wait. Didnt you mention in a previous thread you work in Scotland though? I turned down one scheme due to it having a chance of having to work in Scotland for 2 years... the only place i've applied to is London

I had the option of either moving to london to work for Amec or to Aberdeen to work for Saipem, tbh I didn't lose too much in the way of wage.

I dont see the attraction with london, I still have never been (awaits flames) but for me its easier to travel abroad than to goto london (and cheaper).

Well, if you've never been you'll never know. I just like the hustle and bustle of london life... and I like the way its full of tourists- dunno why, i just do. Choice of food is incredible, I guess thats a big selling point for me. Also you get the most concerts, sporting events etc etc

The only disadvantage is that for the most part, its a big ghetto, and there's a higher chance of getting blown up by terrorists than most places.

Did you already live in scotland? I have several friends in London, and i'm sure most my friends will end up there as it's where most jobs are... that's another reason for me. I'd never move to Scotland, where I know 0 people... not that I couldn't make friends, but it's easier when you have a few mates
