Anyone have any great tips to help relax and fall asleep at night?

It seems lately as soon as I turn off the light and get into bed my mind starts to race with just about anything and everything?

It's pretty annoying that I can't just lay there relaxed and not over thinking!!!

I do actually think its because I go straight from being infront of a monitor to bed within minutes and maybe thats the course?

Music CAN help but sometimes I will keep listening and stay awake, where as other times it will help and I'm falling off that edge within minutes.

It's just that I have been extremely tired this past couple of weeks, and to a point where I feel I need to hit the pro plus or get a pepsi during mid morning!

Any hints/tips?

sometimes trying to concentrate on a book or the tv helps me fall to sleep. But most of the time, it's lights out, head hits pillow and thats it.

I was going to make the exact same thread today! I have the same problem, I be very tired, go to bed. But then my mind starts working and it's like VTEC kicked in 'y0.

Have a tug, you should be ok. ;)

Put my iPod on and listen to a few songs till I'm starting to fall asleep. Sadly some nights if new songs or a good selection of tracks come on (it's on random) I'll be listening to music for a hour or more so I'm sleepy for work.

I have a routine before I sleep which means as soon as I lay down I'm pretty much out. I always do some pressups, situps floss, brush teeth, use mouthwash and wash my face before I sleep which takes about 15 minutes and seems to make me feel really tired as I always go to sleep immediately afterwards.

Try doing a regular routine before you sleep and your body will get used to that routine and going to sleep immediately afterwards.

Do some exercise. Do you do much exercise during the day? If you are just sitting in front of the pc then thats the most likely cause as you arent really tired.

If your tired you will sleep, your problem is getting into bed when your not tired.

my guess is your not doing very much in the day that will set you up for a good nights sleep.

failing that , listen to the bbc world service and farmers weekly , you'll be off in no time.

i just get in bed, i dont bother about any wind down routine just usually mess on the laptop for a bit with the tv on, then as soon as im bored i just turn everything off and next thing i know its morning:)

Have you been sleeping and waking up at times that differ vastly from one another?

What happens is that your body clock goes outta whack. You may be physically tired, but your brain is still very active. You need to gradually get them back into sync.

Also doing things which involve brain activity before sleep will lead to your brain being over active.

Try to do relaxing things in the hour before you sleep. A bath and bed routine works well. This relaxes both mind and body, making falling asleep easier.

I just put the radio on when I goto sleep, I cant bear having nothing distracting my mind as my thoughts send me mad! always have to leave radio on all night else I can't sleep unless I drink myself to sleep that is.

I find Tv can help me fall asleep. The last month or so hasnt been the greatest month for me. a lot of stuff has happened and sometimes i can find it hard to sleep as my mind races away. But i just lie down infront of the tv and it doesnt take long at all for me to start falling asleep. At that point i quickly go to bed as i dont want to fall asleep on the couch or i will wake up with a very bad back!

Lay right on the edge of the bed, it won't be long before you drop off! :)

Seriously though....

I used to have trouble dropping to sleep until I started the following regeme.

1. Eat early in the evening, say 6pm - nothing too heavy, more or less a light snack.
2. Go to the Gym or do some excercise around 7:30 - 8:30.
3. Take a shower.
4. Watch some TV until about 11pm.
5. Go to bed and sleep like a log.

Doing this set of things each night (or most nights) seems to have got my body into a routine and dropping off to sleep now is a doddle.

My other tips would be:

1. Cut down on the amount of caffeine you drink.
2. Stay to stay cool at night (you fall asleep better as your body naturally cools). Wear less clothes to bed.
3. Do not sit in front of your PC just before you go to bed, try and read a book or watch some crap on TV so your brain 'slows' down before you hit the sack.
4. Don't eat late at night.
5. Try some warm milk half hour before you go to bed.

and best of all...

6. Don't worry about trying to drop off to sleep.

Good night !
