Debit cards, why do so few places accept them?

Snowdog, is there an equivalent of Lloyds TSB in the Netherlands, as they offer Visa debit to under 19s.

Failing that, if you're allowed to, create a paypal account for your dad.

You can opt for using Switch services at online stores as its basically same as Maestro / Solo (As its a debit card as well just really another name for solo/maestro card)

Maestro cards are for people with bad credit or new accounts. Try getting a "proper" debit card from your bank.

I've only had problems with using Maestro online for one transaction in the UK - Marriott hotels have no facility for using it online although after a phone call, I was told that the CC needed to book was only for booking and I could use my Maestro to pay the bill after my stay, all I had to do was find someone willing to book for me using their CC - no problem.

I have had issues trying to pay for online services/purchases outwith the UK but I rarely have to do this, so not really a huge issue. Having said that, I've used it to purchase goods from a couple of Dutch sites in the past and at duty free at Schiphol and Paris, CDG but I'm not sure how widespread acceptance is generally. I've also used it to withdraw cash from a Link ATM in a hotel Cairo (5 star hotel - BA were paying - Lobster Thermidore, yummy).

I can think of very few online stores who don't accept Maestro.

If there isn't an option for Maestro you can probably just select Master Card and it'll work.

Need to be 18 for Paypal, and afraid about fraud stuff if they find out I'm 16 while I claim I'm 18.


EDIT: Would it be of any risk if I filled in my dad's ( 1st name starts with same letter ) data but my own account for paypal?

I've been using paypal since before I was 18. Same with ebay.

He's from the Netherlands. When I had a German paypal account I could only use a credit card or 'EC' debit card, not Maestro.

In theory selecting mastercard for a meastro may work. After all the card processor doesn't need to know what kind of card it is as they already know from the card number (which contains card type, issuing bank, account number and a neat anti fraud algorithm). Given this they should be able to tell the card is actually a meastro, but they may reject it as asking you for the card type is a security check of sorts...
