A PC I built for my brother has recently stopped working. The PC was in use when it reset itself then refuse to post. When i hit the power button the power suppply comes on along with the cpu/gpu fans and hard disks etc. There are no beep codes and the monitor does not switch on.

The system is based around a Quad Core Intel C2D, Gigabyte P35C_DS3R, 8800GTX and 2gb crucial DDR2 1066.

I think that its probably the CPU or the motherboard, I'm not sure how to tell which though. Any ideas how i can find out so I can RMA the correct part. I dont have any other components that fit with this kit to test.

To rule out the cpu you could take out the RAM, turn the system on, then you should get post error beeps then. ie 3 long beeps, which means theres a ram error (as you removed the ram)

If you don't get the beeps, try re-seating the cpu, see what that does.

Out of interest what psu are you using? And I take it all power cables are connected to the motherboard? Sorry, but we have to ask :)

The pc was fully working until recently. My brother had been using it for about a month without issue. Ill take the ram out now and see what happens. Thx for the suggestion.

Ok when I take out the ram the system beeps continously. I take it that means the memory is faulty then?

You mentioned to try re-seating the cpu. Why is it that taking the ram out indicates a CPU error. I would have thought that doing this indicated that the ram was faulty and that is what was preventing the system from booting.

Not at all, if your getting error beeps, it means the cpu is at least capable of posting.

Read my post again :) If your getting beeps, it means the cpu is trying to boot (which is a good thing). Try and re-seat your RAM again, see if it posts. If it doesen't, try one stick at a time in every slot.

Your RAM could be faulty, or one of the memory slots on your board could have gone caput =/

If you do get the beeps, try re-seating the cpu, see what that does.

Should that be if you "don't" get beeps? As if you do get beeps then its the ram causing the problem in which case there would be no point in re-seating the CPU?

Either way taking a stick out has fixed the problem so I guess ill get the memory RMA'ed. Thanks for the help.
