IPTV for 360 - a tie up with BT

Hmm, leave Pipex's 8Meg unlimited at £15 a month for BT's at £27...

Don't think so :(

Shame really, as it has great potential.

I think it should be available to all 360 owners, but like how the iPhone is tied to O2, Sky 1 tied to Sky only etc, if you want this feature then you have to change your ISP to BT. Surely BT liked the idea of doing this with MS, as it would possibly generate a lot more interest in their ISP and therefore more revenue on the ISP side of things. One question I have though is unless you have the £25 package, surely the 5 and 8 GB limits would soon be used up streaming TV over the net, so are the saying that you need the top tier service or do you think there will be some increase in the cap?

Already been stated a couple of times but as BT's vision service doesn't count towards monthly caps it's assumed this IPTV service won't.

I still can't understand how they can get away with it. I'm no business expert, but I'd have thought if MS and BT are the ONLY ones to allow this, it would be a breach of the monopolies act which is illegal.

Your right - your no expert :p

That's like saying its illegal for SKY to pay for and show all the big US series on Skyone before anyone else.

It says quite clearly in the article linked in the 1st post -
"Xbox 360 with Microsoft Mediaroom (IPTV), will be available to service providers by the end of the year. Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) features will only be available from the Xbox 360 through a service provider who has deployed Xbox 360 with Microsoft Mediaroom (IPTV) services," said a Microsoft spokesperson.

Maybe it's the cheapskate ISPs who won't pay up and invest in their infrastructure for their customers and put the equipment/software in place, maybe they want to see what the demand is like before they want to dip their toes in the water, maybe it's them you should be complaining about/to.

Really don't get the palava.

I have a choice, and I choose to stick with my cable TV and broadband.

Some very weird responses tbh..

ITS OVERRATED ANYWAYS!!!

I downloaded 2x HDTV 720p movies from my old USA account.
The qaulity was fine, the problem is that it took 9 hours to download one @ 4 gig.
Im on a reasonably fast 8mb connection so thats very slow.

Of course this was prior to them detecting a UK machine in the UK. I used the USA 2100 points cards to obtain some downloads. You can still look at whats available on the USA marketplace just that it will say not for your region.

Personally i think the X360 isnt the best machine for the job when say compared to a service Sky could possible offer.

I dont think you understand IPTV. It's about streaming SD video - not downloading HD files and watching later. It's all video on demand - you dont get any files to play with.

Also, Sky does not do IPTV or any kind of video on demand from the STB.

So how will users get on when BT start throttling their connections because of usage?

Not many worse ISP's in the market to be honest.

Heh, after 6 hours, they halve your framerate, then after 12 hours it goes audio only :D

People with BTVision have QOS (Quality Of Service) on their line which ensures that sufficient bandwidth is present for the video on demand.

BT as an ISP have been excellent for me (and for many others) ever since the first days of ADSL. Trust me there are worse - a lot worse ISPs out there.

Yes, because they are quiet when not running stuff from the DVD drive.

*Spits out Coffee*

Tell that to my Delta monster.

On Subject: I cant see me going for this as I dont fancy switching ISP, I also want to wait and see what features the Sony Play TV device has for recording/viewing TV, if its comparable with WMCE then I'm switching.

Ill stick to Sky HD and Newsgroups thanks.
Do we really need such a service?
I live in the countryside and can only just get Freeview. By that I mean I can get the BBC channels and some other ones. ITV, 4, 5 don't seem to work though. I was thinking about the BT vision because we have the max package anyway but knowing that this is coming is quite good for me. It's another means of receiving TV so I can't see why we wouldn't need it.

Satellite -Costs £££
Terrestrial - Lacks quality
Cable - Only available to people who can receive cable
IPTV - For all (at the moment only for people with BT)

It's up to other ISPs if they want to provide this service. It's funny watching people moan about how you have to be with BT. Oh so there are other ISPs out there offering IPTV? Oh wait...

Also Mr Latte, I am heart broken that you did not know what IPTV was. You are the god of home entertainment. Hang you head in shame :p

its actually incredibly handy to have it all on demand if thats what you meant.
To be honest, virgin TV is free, and its only a few quid for the extra bulk of channels, then you get their on demand, which is spot on.

Oh and about sky not offering on demand - they will in the near future, its already been announced, it will only be available to people with sky+ subscriptions though.

You wont get extra freeview channels using this service. It's not like Homechoice where there is a programme schedule & channels are received just by "tuning" in. BT's service is purely video on demand that offers catchup TV (for C4 only at the mo), a large selection of films, series, comedies, music videos and Prem footie etc. So you'd be stuck with your handful of freeview channels I'm afraid.
