About nine months ago, my g/f and I made our first foray to our nearest (and highly recommended) Japanese restaurant - Wasabi Sabi in Sheffield, for those that are interested. My initial reaction to the idea is probably quite a common one ('but it's raw for god's sake') but I'm open to new ideas and decided to give it a go. Now we were both pleasantly surprised, and although we didn't try that many different types of Sushi, the stuff we had was very nice and we decided we'd go back again in the future.
Now we've got two young kids (2 & 6) and so it's not easy to go out, but about once a month we trip trapped down to the place and had some Sushi (and sometimes even some cooked stuff - I love the Bento boxes, especially with Duck and Chicken Teryaki) and tried a fair few things, although generally we ate the same stuff because we'd got a taste for it.
As time moved on, my g/f became more and more keen to go, even when we had the kids. Now, as many people who have kids are aware, taking young kids to restaurants is very difficult, especially if they are young. My eldest tends to be too loud and doesn't like anything (like she was ever going to eat raw fish) and my youngest tends to take any two objects, regardless of the value/use and bang them together very loudly. Oh, and rip anything that's rippable into a million little pieces.
So we had one slightly fraut trip with the kids, but she was still keen to go as often as possible. Now we're not poor, but we're not well off either and typically for two of us it's between £30 and £40, something we can't really afford to spend on a weekly basis. 'It's OK' I thought. 'After the debacle with the children, a couple of trips a month won't break the bank,' but little did I know.
Two weeks ago, something horrible happened...
Until then, to get the Sushi we had to go in, sit down and order it. However, on our last trip she noticed something new, a takeaway menu
Now, she can order over the phone (kids or not) and she (or I) can (or in my case have to) go and pick it up. So if I'm out taking the kids to the grandparents, I may get a phone call 15 minutes before I leave. Actually, that's a lie - it's usually a text message with a list of what needs to be picked up and brought home.
Her argument of course is that she doesn't smoke, doesn't drink and rarely goes out (all true) and why shouldn't she spend her money on this, and in fairness she's absolutely right, she can. Equally, although I don't drink (I do smoke) I occasionally buy a 360 game and so why shouldn't she get Sushi on occasion. Ok, I'm ignore the money she spends on clothes, but that is apparently 'ignored' as a luxury expense for women - it's an essential (like food).
Ultimately there's nothing I can do about this, but I'm waiting with dread the point at which this restaurant decides to deliver. At that point I'm convinced she'll never eat anything home cooked again and I'll be forced into male prostitution to cover her 'habit'.
Anyone else addicted to the crazy Japanse raw fish stuff, and if so, is there a cure (a sort of Sushi Methodone?).
Oh, and we both thoroughly recomend 'Saka-Maki', 'Sake Nigiri Sushi', 'Tekka-Maki', 'Kare Koroke' and of course, I like 'Bento Boxes'

Thanks for listening to my plight.
