Sushi Addiction

Anyone else feels it's coming through your nose when you put too much on the food?

Interestingly I think that's a major part of the addiction for her - the wasabi. She deliberately uses to much, tears start pouring down her face and then she says (in a mock apologetic voice) 'I think a had a bit too much' but I know she loves it.

Great for clearing colds though :)

Actually, that's got me thinking - maybe a good Sushi cookbook (misnomer that, but there you go) for Christmas would be an idea, as long as I can source the fresh fish, wasabi and stuff to wrap it in. What is it wrapped in? Seaweed? Rice paper? Skin of some hideous green beast?

Had it once never again! I don't trust the source of the fish. When I used to keep fish, the parasites were a problem to keep off so eating raw fish doesn't do it for me really.

I love Sushi, not least because it makes a great vessel for Wasabi :)

My girlfriend is from Hong Kong and a chef so we have it for dinner quite often. It's not hard to make and a little bit of fish can go a long way.

We went out to eat Sushi last weekend and I didn't rate it compared to what we have at home, plus it was an absolute rip off.

I absolutlely love sushi too, but then again I also make it myself.

It was my gf's birthday last week and we went to a proper restaurant and it was great, gave me more ideas of things to make :)

Don't be daunted by the complexity of it, most sushi is actually really simple to make once you get the hang of it, you really can't get boiling rice and chopping things wrong. You can save a fair bit of money doing it yourself and it doesn't taste much different to the "real" stuff.

All you need to start is a bamboo mat (if you want to make nori rolls), a very sharp knife, sushi vinegar, soy sauce, wasabi, sushi rice and fresh fish & veg :)

Starts making list...

Funny actually, I used to have a bamboo mat but used to use it for something different.... ;)

Just need to find somewhere that sells sushi rice and vinegar. I take it sushi vinegar is different from rice vinegar?

Ok, well I found this place: -

http://www.japanesekitchen.co.uk/

And as a starting point I'm thinking: -

Mitsukan : Sushi Vinegar (Sushi-Su)
Clearspring : Organic Sushi Rice - 500g
Yamamotoyama : Mame Nori (Soybean wrappers/paper) 20 sheets
S&B : Wasabi Paste (Japanese Horseradish) - 43g
Marufuji : Sushi Rolling Mat (Makisu)

+ fish (when I can source some really fresh salmon and tuna)

Do I need this stuff? :-

Mitsukan: Powdered Sushi Seasoning Mix(2pc)

Anything else I need?

Penski No I ain't they did it when they were with a load o japanese wrestlers in the Movie 7 Deadly Sins

Edit: Anyhow The Jackass lot are Pussys'!!

I like sushi too. But I've only ever eaten it from supermarkets. Must try a restaurant some time.
Same.

I wouldn't mind going to Wasabi Sabi some time. I've been to East Oceans before and had some Ramen, that was beautiful.

I actually had an urge to have some Ramen for dinner today but stuck at work. :(

Restaurant sushi is way better but it does depend where you go as it varies, try to get freshly made stuff.

The rice is fresh and soft and try to get proper wasabi and not stuff from a bottle. You wont be disappointed if you find a good place!

I love the stuff but I've only had the stuff from the supermarkets and a chinese/japenese buffet, which don't contain raw fish (tuna & smoked salmon are not raw). What sort of raw fish are in the stuff they sell at restaurants then?

Always thought of making my own.

You shouldn't do, the seasoning mix (that you add to the rice) is usually a replacement for the vinegar. The powder really gets up your nose

Sushi vinegar is actually based on rice vinegar, you just need to put it on a gentle heat and add salt and sugar and you've pretty much got sushi vinegar :)

I'm hoping to get a Japanese cooking book for xmas too and some tableware too. I'm by no means an expert but it's good fun to make and tasty :)

Here is one of my first attempts at nori rolls a few months back...

For 'takeaway' sushi, find a Pret a Manger...Lovely stuff. ****loads of ginger, proper wasabi (although not enough) and good bits (raw tuna for the win)
