Right, I'm about to lap my Q6600 CPU and I thought I'd compose a thread to show all what temperature differences I'm seeing. I'll try and get a pic of the CPU half way through to show the state of the heat spreader.

Temps then...

Before lapping:

Idle

31/31/31/35

Prime 95 at start:

56/56/56/56

Prime 95 after 5 mins:

61/61/60/61

To be continued in about 30 mins. If not then I've done something seriously wrong!

Are those temps at 3.55ghz? Your temps are pretty much perfectly level, which would suggest that your IHS is too.

I'm not sure why you'd want to void your warranty just to have a lapped CPU.

Indeed... temps don't even look quite good for a quad...

I'd be supprised if you got more than a 1-2C improvement by making the surface smoother.

I lapped my E6600 because the temps on one core are about 5C higher than the other, even after lapping its the same, I assume its just poor contact inside the IHS and there is nothing I can do about that. Still, doesn't stop it clocking OK :)

After lapping (took ages to get it flat perfectly, it was massivly concave in the centre).

Idle:

31/31/31/31

Prime start

54/54/54/55

Prime after 10 mins

57/58/58/58

Going to be having another go at it as I'm not convinced I've got it flat enough. Temps are only about 3 deg down, and when I look at the paste I can see it concentrating around the centre still.

As for warranty, I've got the OEM chip so it's only a year anyway, and I doubt very much that it will die. CPUs very rarely die once working from my experience.

TBH I would just leave it. You're not going to see any difference by doing more work...your temps are great.

Do you think that there might be a little more to squeeze out of the overclock once you have lapped it?

If you want to keep it under the magic 60-65c then shaving a few C off can certainly help.

I did it to my e6300 and it took about 2c off full load. I miss it too as this e6400 kinda sucks....my e6300 did 3.22ghz @ 1.35 and now I'm at the same speed w/the e6400 at 1.45v and its toasty.

I was debating with myself whether to lap my e6320 to try and squeeze a little more out of it but decided to stay happy with 3.2ghz on 1.325.

Good temps of 34c idle and 56c full load. Shame you got rid of yours as I have read a few posts saying the e6400 does have issues with having to have higher vcore.

Sorry milanochris, dont mean to knock your thread off topic. I'll shut up now. :o

It's because I had an older B2 stepping e6300 and now have a L2 stepping e6400. The B2's were great clockers.

I would say your temps are quite good for that then.....but i don't have a quad core...someone else want to chime in here?

Sorry if this sounds like a totally n00b question, but can you lap the cpu block as well or is that not possible?

**Waits for the laughs** :o

Sure can....I did my EK wave. Make sure to take off the plexi-top first though otherwise it may crack.

no point lapping the CPU if you dont do the heatsink/block as well

Though the Fuzion is supposed to be bowed to give greater pressure isnt it? so you dotn want it totaly flat? Or is that just with the stock (i.e. WARPED) IHS?
