They go through balloons don't they? There pretty bad to get in your eyes i imagine, just use responsibly and have a laugh

I have a cheap one that says "<5mW". AFAIK they are safe, but i wouldn't point it near anyone's eyes.

I have a 50mw ebayser, cant burn anything, no IR filter and fairly dangerous to eyes.
Just be very careful never to even point it any where near your own eyes or anyone elses. Remember the Invisible raditation wont be as directional as the green laser you see, its likely to be much more spread out so keep that in mind.

I guess it reflects off dust/water particles in the air.
just the dust in the air.
But then why doesn't a red laser pen do the same. Or is it a case of, visible beam*

the eye is far more sensitive to green light than any other colour - it is also used to judge the contrast of an image by the brain for that reason - thats why green lights look sharp but red lights look blurred.
ompared to a red laser pointer, the green beam remains visible and penetrates the air much farther. Because of its particular spectrum you see the beam and not just the end dot. Also, it's about 50 times brighter than an ordinary red laser pointer -- using the same safe low power.

blue is most visible though
blue also looks better on lcd screens, which is why a lot of the time you look at a pc shop they use the fish screen saver with the nice blue water
