I bought one last night online, its 10mw and was only £8

I was wondering if there is any safety issues with these things and if anyone has one on here, also if you have any photos of the beam?

cheers

I have a cheap one that says "<5mW". AFAIK they are safe, but i wouldn't point it near anyone's eyes.

Today, it is accepted that even low-power lasers with only a few milliwatts of output power can be hazardous to human eyesight.

I have a 5mw Wicked Lasers Core and it is pretty cool, it's the only power I'd recommend without using safety goggles, even though 5mw is a low power one if you look at the dot it projects onto the wall you'll get spots in front of your eyes and if you get a direct or reflected beam in the eye it's dazzling and you'll have a spot for a few mins. It can't light matches, cut tape or pop baloons like the others but it easilly puts a very visible dot on the hotel 500m away out of my window.
If you're reasonably close to the axis of the beam it's visible at night outside.

Watch out for cheap greenies as they don't always have filters and the UV light they give off is invisible and can screw your eyes. A lot of the cheap makes lie about their output too saying it is a 5mw laser, although that is technically true maybe 1mw of that is green and the rest is UV which you can't see, that means a true 5mw green which only outputs green and no UV look much brighter to the human eye.

Also the cheaper ones don't have as good collimation and divergence so over distance the beam gets quite wide and less visible then a more expensive one with good lenses and collimation.

One of my lecturers (Dr Bolt) had one of these for some of our lectures. It was good as it got our attention, but I was amazed at how bright it was! It was awesome though. I want one.

I have a 50mw ebayser, cant burn anything, no IR filter and fairly dangerous to eyes.

Just be very careful never to even point it any where near your own eyes or anyone elses. Remember the Invisible raditation wont be as directional as the green laser you see, its likely to be much more spread out so keep that in mind.

Some excellent posts thanks folks, regarding uv are you saying that just looking at the beam going away from you is capable of damage?

The amount of non-visible radiation these things dish out is fairly shocking. Be very careful of your eyes around the output of these things!

i bought a 35mw one from Ebay a few years ago when they were all the rage.. paid £70 for it! An impulse buy, wanted to see if we could shine it over to the next island into a friends house... it could on a perfect night!!

exactly
in a dusty room, VERY easy to see

but on a dark night (no ambient light here), the beam is easily visible

But then why doesn't a red laser pen do the same. Or is it a case of, visible beam*

*If you haven't dusted in 2 months.

the eye is far more sensitive to green light than any other colour - it is also used to judge the contrast of an image by the brain for that reason - thats why green lights look sharp but red lights look blurred.

ompared to a red laser pointer, the green beam remains visible and penetrates the air much farther. Because of its particular spectrum you see the beam and not just the end dot. Also, it's about 50 times brighter than an ordinary red laser pointer -- using the same safe low power.

blue is most visible though :)

blue also looks better on lcd screens, which is why a lot of the time you look at a pc shop they use the fish screen saver with the nice blue water
