£1500 - £2000 to spend on first car?!

yes I thank you all! 306 d-turbo FOR THE WIN!.. found a quote for £1100, using quinn direct :) good old irish..

Also, could someone tell me, how much mileage would be acceptable for a 306.. 100k?

The only problem with the 306 is although the engine (looked after) will run forever, the interiors and electrics will not. There isn't really a gospel mileage to avoid, just make sure you don't buy one where things don't work/are tempermental.

Just find the best condition one you can and ignore the number on the odometer (assuming its been serviced properly) :)

It spools up at around 2500-2800 rpm and is full chat at 3000rpm, it runs out of steam just over 4000rpm. The numbers look odd, but don't forget a diesel only needs 2/3 the rev of a petrol to make it's power.

It's a narrow powerband, but it's easy to stay in when being a hooligan. When you stay under the turbo speeds you can almost get the same mpg as the non-turbo (ours used to average around 45-50mpg)

You can also "home tune" these engines (look on pug306.net for "stage 1 tune"), letting your turbo come in early giving you noticably more poke, the obvious downside of course being increased fuel consumption.

Bare in mind he is 17, and an insurance company wont take too kindly to modifications.

Do you declare to your house insurance that one of your door locks is actually only 3 lever and not the required 5? Same thing, everyone does it, no-one will ever pick up on it.

Get a polo, prbably the only sensible car i'd recommend for first timers.

Of all the cars in the world, the only one you'd say is sensible for a first timer is a Polo? Nothing else? That's a bit dramatic isn't it? What makes the Polo head and shoulders above anything else
