WHAT is a lot?????

Welcome to languages I know its hard to understand but new words are made frequently :)

There's a difference between 'making a new word' and just merging two words into one word when there's no need for it and for no other reason than ignorance.

Languages change, of course, but that's no excuse for not knowing the basic rules of grammar.

Explain how it doesn't make sense?

Its mearly an advanced form of abbreviation :)

true, but "I would have gone to the shops..." √ Sounds wrong and doesn't roll off the tongue. where as "I would have gone to the shops..." x Sounds better and less jarring.
Only because people say "I would've gone to the shops", and 've sounds more like "of" than "have". :p

But 've still represents the word "have", and never "of"

Oooohhhhhh it's the "getting rightseous"now is it?
Last time I heard that used was way back in 1968 when I was a biker.
For your info I mangle the"queens"English on porpoise.......I mean poipose eeerrrrr purpose.
I like to butcher the English on purpose..........
same as when I go into a pub where nobody knows me...........I mix Spanish and German together(spoken with a Southern drawl) just to confuse them.

Your poor use of punctuation makes baby Jesus cry.

Language follows speech not the written word, so the writing should change to suit the current voice of the people.

I already said I like doin it on purpose..........................
can ye not understand laddie(or maybe lassie)......................
I know exactly WHAT I am doin.

Language happens to be my forty(I mean forte)but I like messin around with it OK???

There are so many people in here that lack the ability to write simple, coherant posts. I understand that some of them may have dyslexia or whatever, but all of them can't...

its not a spelling exam!!
Indeed this isn't a spelling exam, but it is a thread about niggling spelling annoyances, and therefore people will contribute to it and say what spelling errors they find annoying.

To be brutally honest, I believe it is only the people who are incapable of spelling things correctly without effort (or can't at all) who whine about how pedantic the spelling/grammar "nazis" are.

:p

People make mistakes - people need to get over it tbh.

It's a waste of time getting wound up about it - there are worse things to worry about.

No it's not; the new word is no shorter in pronunciation or spelling than the original other than that a space has been removed. The only effect it's had is to make it less clear that it in fact means 'a lot'.

There's no need to contract 'a lot' into 'a lot' as it doesn't make it easier to pronounce or write and removes the meaning inherent in its original form.
