Hairdresser sued for refusing to hire Muslim woman in a headscarf

If she is adamant she wants to wear her headscarf she would probably be more suited to being a hairdresser... in Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan or perhaps Turkey

That's if she can find employment because of her gender.

This is the uk

respect BRITISH heritage and culture or get the **** out

are you for real? like it or not, England isn't just a place for white people to sit in top hat and tails having tiffing and playing croquet - and what's more, it probably hasn't been in your lifetime. we have black people on our football team, and [probably] people of asian descent on our cricket team. people should be allowed to express themselves and their faith in any benevolent way they see fit - that's freedom of speech for you.

FYI - I'm British, my parents are British and 3 out of 4 of my grandparents are British - does that 1 out of 4, coupled with my lack of faith in the Church (the word faith used in the spiritual sense) mean that I should get the **** out? that's British heritage, after all

I think the whole racism topic is going way over the top now anyways. There was some black dude serving me in a shop and i genuinely couldn't understand what he was saying. I was then accused of being racist when i asked to speak to someone who could speak fluent English. It really winds me up.

Fair enough! However, when they go for a job that requires one to remove a non-religious article of headgear then they should bloody well remove it and not go crying like a baby to the nearest liberal journalist.

I hardly think that's the way a man of honour would really conduct himself.

this headscarf thing is getting a bit stupid now though - to be honest, I'm not really sure where I stand on it - but I'm even more unsure of why a headscarf bothers people so much. are we really that xenophobic?

words escape me - they really do

You aren't sure where you stand on it? How can you not be? What has this got to do with xenophobia? Before judging the people you have quoted maybe you should read your own posts. Hairdressers headscarf hairdressers headscarf hairdressers headscarf hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Are you for real?

ok, I'll elaborate - I'm not sure where to stand on it because I really don't see that it should even be an issue. I just don't think it matters. Do you have a stance on which channel I switch to in a minute? the 2 things are just as important.

it has everything to do with xenophobia - I'd be willing to bet that most people dislike headscarves because they've heard in the news that muslims wear them, and even the word muslim has had such negative connotations brought to it by the media.

so there, that's why I judge the people I've quoted - because they seem to be following the mob, and the mob (as always) can't justify its actions, and shows no sign of intelligence.

what job really REQUIRES you to not wear a headscarf? and by that, I mean what job would you physically be incapable of doing? she can see, so she'd be ok there - and the headscarf isn't soundproof so she can listen to and perpetuate inane banter.

Miss Desrosier said: "When a potential client walks past on the street, they look into a salon at the stylists to get an impression of what haircut they are going to get there.

"The image I have built my salon on is very urban, funky, punky. That is the look I am going for.

"If an employee were wearing a baseball cap or cowboy hat I would ask them to remove it at work.

Re-quoted.

This doesn't need to be a race or religion issue. The employer has a certain dress code. If you're not prepared to abide by it, they won't employ you. Simple as that.

1. Would you like your hair cut by someone who feels the need, for whatever the reason, to cover their hair up? Maybe you wouldn't mind but plenty of people would.

2. Would you as an employer not prefer your employees to act as an advertisement in an establishment such as a hair salon? Again maybe you wouldn't but any business woman/man with any sense would.

The fact that she may be capable of the job is neither here nor there it is whether she would be the best for the job and as she wears a headscarf then clearly she is not. She was asked of she would remove the headscarf at work and she refused to. The argument for her employment stops there.

what totally irrelevant drivel. as I said before, a headscarf will not, bottom line, have any effect on her ability to do her job - the only problem with it is the woman who owns the salon's problem with head-wear.

the fact that she may be capable of doing the job should be all there is to do with it. I've been to plenty of hairdressers where they all look like complete knobs, but they were hired so who gives a crap?! this woman wasn't even given a chance, just because of some stupid sensationalist journalism that would have you believe that all people wearing headscarves are really poking their tongues out, or have their mouths filled with dynamite or something. ridiculous.

It isn't getting through to you at all is it...

A hairdesser without hair on show is like Vanessa Feltz as your personal trainer. It doesn't make any sense and it is bad for business and that is ALL there is to it. If you can't understand that then there is something clearly wrong with you.

An employer is entitled to not employ someone who may have a negative effect on her income.

no it isn't - Vanessa Feltz is a huge fatty, and can probably not run for more than 30 feet without a donut break - someone in a headscarf could quite easily cut your hair.

does being bald mean you're a bad advert for a hair salon? I know you must have seen a bald hairdresser before!

also, what's with all the hostility? If you carry on, I won't bother continuing the debate. If I wanted to be whined at and insulted, I'd try and wake my girlfriend.

The employer requires prospective employees to show off their hair, most probably as an advert for her services, so this woman should remove the scarf if she wants to work there, otherwise go elsewhere for a job. It's not like Islam forces her to wear the headscarf, so I can't see the problem. In fact the only problem is some misguided idiotic Muslim trying to milk the system over a none existent offence.

If she feels that hard done by then there's a simple solution, and they regularly fly from places called airports!

hypothetically - what if it's nothing to do with what Islam dictates? it's just her personal expression of her faith. is that any less valid just because it's not officially muslim?

Too much of this going on, we need to turn the tables and see how they like it.

Are there any Muslim only jobs about, where you need to wear headscarfs etc? (or some other Islamic garments). When you turn up with Christian jewellery and crosses and get refused the job, we can run off crying and sue them for religious discrimination.

I'm not Christian, but I can't think of any Agnostic clothing.

If that's the case, then why is causing a "it's only because I'm a Muslim" problem? She knows damn well what she's doing and is going to milk it all the way to the bank.

to be honest, if it were physically possible I'd prefer you were sent back. there's really no point debating this subject with people like you, so any further reply you have will fall on deaf ears. probably best to save your energy for the hate-rallies

Its part of the advertisement of the salon, if the people working there have good hair styles it will attract more custom, give the woman a break... coming from a small salon she needs all the help she can get to make it in the business world.

Btw... Miss Noah looks like a proper smug bitch in that picture.
