Hairdresser sued for refusing to hire Muslim woman in a headscarf

The Daily Mail exaggerates anything like this, and even encourages it so it's smug middle class readers can sit at home shaking their heads.

If I applied for a job as a model and got turned down because of the way I look and said I was going to sue, would they cover that story? No, they would think "What an idiot".

The Daily Mail is just as bad as the people they encourage to do this kind of thing.

maybe the dress code should have been advertised with the job then.

yeah because every job advert we see advertises a dress code. bit of common sense might say, 'oh look i'm a hairdresser, people just might perchance want to see what i do with my own hair before paying for the privilege of taking a set of shears to theirs.'

so you would refuse to get your hair cut from a bald guy because he is bald ?

look lets see what he does with his own hair....oh no he has shaved it all off and he will do the same to me....i better run away and never return to the ppl that make me bald.

I'm not allowed too many piercings and/or ones in certain areas for my job, as well as keep any tattoos just elbow length for short sleeve shirts, they can stick out a bit but not full sleeve :)

What makes her any different? If she can't wear the attire and conform for THAT job. eff off!

he's either shaved it in which case has he left any tufts? or he's a baldy in which case he can't really do anything about it? tell you what they should go ask 100 people on the average street if they sneak a peek at how their hairdressers barnet before they sit down and whether or not they'd be put off going for a haircut if their hairdresser had either a) craply cut hair b) a great big headcovering hiding their hair. c) a nicely shaved head or was congenitally bald.

Because you obviously wouldn't see it having an effect on people purchasing the service. you'd be wrong however.

the employer was obviously within her rights as a business woman to refuse employment.

lol ^^

so if a hairdresser has good hair that makes him a good hairdresser ? are you under the impression they cut/style their own hair ?

if the employer was so obviously in her rights to refuse employment then why has she been fined ?

lol, because people will certainly see it as an indicator. it's like a form of lol advertisement.

lol
because the laws an ass.

i'll break it down for you. ask people if they see a hairdresser with utterly crap hair cuts or head coverings if it might put them off having their hair cut by that person. would they be put off by having their hair cut by that person. my guess would be yes. do they think that person cuts their own hair. no. so why do they still get put off, oh yes because it's the image you present to your customer.

as i said the laws an ass to fine the employer.

So peeps does this mean that bald people can't be hired for hair dressers as they can't display a hair style (as they have none) ?

Racism aside I think the girl has a point, if you read the whole story it's the only thing stopping her getting the job and the owner hasn't handled it well at all.

The main culprit is the law, you SHOULD be able to specify a uniform which can include banning religious items or clothing at the work place.

ok, fair enough. if you set racism aside then what's the main issue? if it is the headscarf then it simply shows that from an economical and branding point of view that the employer considered wearing a headscarfing would have a negative impact on profitability. racism being set aside you would look at the reasons for this and as stated the employer looks for the staff to display their hair to the public to give the impression of what kind of styles they might expect. i bet the other staff are aware of their roles in being the public image of the company and that if they allow their hair to become unruly they'll be pulled into line. it's plain to see that in any customer facing job, your job role will encompass more than the one element. In my job i can do the basics just as well if i'm in scruffy jeans and t-shirt with unkempt hair. however i'm willing to wager my performance would be worse than it is currently because i would be ignoring other elements of my that are asked of me as the public face of my company.
That's if you take racism out of the picture.

What you need to look at is, did the employer refuse to give the hairdresser a job because a) she's racist (don't see much evidence of that) or b) she considered the covering of hair in the position of hairdresser would affect business and that any hairdresser who worked in her salon had a role not just as a cutter of hair but also to promote the image of the salon.

its like talking to my wife....she also makes little sense to me.

im not saying its you...

no i can't imagine it is if, as has already been pointed out you thought the hairdresser had already been fined. it's probably just missing out on some of the comprehension.

to be honest, if it were physically possible I'd prefer you were sent back. there's really no point debating this subject with people like you, so any further reply you have will fall on deaf ears. probably best to save your energy for the hate-rallies

Well said! :)

Actually here's the trick, a hairdresser can't cut their own hair so being bald means you can't advertise your colleagues abilities. However YOUR abilities are probably advertised by your colleagues who need you to cut THEIR hair.

If you move to a small town with only 2 barbers, which one do you trust to cut your hair? The one with a rubbish hair cut or the one with a great haircut?

Clearly the one with the rubbish cut, because he must have cut the other guys hair!

:D
