ATI 3870XT vs 8800GT Official review @ Legionhardware

im going to say that drivers will not save this card, since its on the architecture as the 2900. 8800gt is different to 8800gts since it has sime changes to the core, like the additional texturing units and the triangle setup units i believe.

38 series is just a die shrink. and as such if new drivers are to sort something out it will be like the 2900, its gonna take atleast 6 months to do something. but again i believe drivers will not make or break this card since it is already borked from factory.

and as for willhub, im shocked since he was asking for £150 as the reserve on his 8800gt on the bay. i told you will not to have faith in the 38 series and stick to your 8800gt. ;)

Personally I think for guys like us 2x3850 (overclocked of course!) is where it's gonna be at. A *lot* of us (enthusiasts with Core2 systems) have Crossfire-capable motherboards & I can't wait to bench a pair to see what the results are.

I'm thinking 8800Ultra level for cheap money

Think I'll wait for Anandtech review. I'm sure the 8800GT is a little faster than the 3870XT, but 40 FPS in some games? I doubt it and it's making me think this review is No Swearing!.

i just dont understand why they release cards that they know are not good enough. if i was AMD/ATI i would concentrate my resources for like 6-12 months and then release a proper card.

HI there

That is AMD's advantage as Intel boards support Crossfire. The fact Intel boards generally are far better clockers than any of the nforce options is why so many people either look for a single card solution or Crossfire so they can use an Intel based mothernoard.

If Intel supported SLi and it worked then NVIDIA sales would increase more as there would be a lot more people buying into SLi.

i have an x1950 pro and wanted to stay with ATI hoping for something good...

i am extremely disapointed in the price if ATI want my custom they need to drop the HD3870 even more, but also i dont know what 3rd party coolers fit 35db is WAY too loud i have an accelero S1 which i know fits the 8800gt.

power savings are ok but the 8800gt isnt a monster power consumer anyway. Right now their is no choice i will buy an 8800gt or i might even wait for the next gen

I have to agree, nVidia should open it up as it would shift them a HELL of a lot more gfx cards :)

An X38/X48 mobo & 2x3850s with a Crysis profile has my mouth-watering :D

problem is, none of the current cards are good enough for running crysis on. its the only reason why i have not got a 8800gt myself yet. need something quicker to run crysis at better speeds/settings.

as for multi card configs, i never like them, too much losses incurred, e.g if each card has 512mb ram total ram of 2 cards is still seen as 512mb not 1gig so its wastage like that and inconsistant performance depending on the game which is run, why i don;t like multi card configs.

although for those with screens with 2560x1600 rez or multi monitor gaming i suppose they have no choice really to go for multi cards to get playable framerates.

Yeah, that's the one thing i envy about the ATI cards, multi gpu on an Intel chipset, I'm on a commando mobo and i love it to bits but now i have a GT there is no chance of banging another GT in there and doing some SLI and I'm not overly keen on Nvidia chipsets but may eventually go down that root to SLI my GT.

sli not working on intel boards, is that a hardware restriction, or something in the nvidia drivers restricting it?

Both maps offer similar performance Raikiri so it actually doesnt matter!

Also can I add that the 7.10's dont seem to work with the HD3870's anyways! I tried installing them and it basically says no lol! Im on the CD drivers and thats a first for me lol!

Well, using the default settings (heatray, 12 bots, high details, 1280x1024) I scored 124fps which is 30 more than they got with a slower CPU and the same graphics.

That's 35fps higher than yours, bigger than the difference shown in the review between our two cards.

Still shows you how different the reviews are sometimes thought doesnt it? whats your CPU btw? Also I cant use Catalyst 7.10's on my card since they dont work with it which does suck indeed!

Not really, because we don't know the settings they used :p

All it shows is that there's a fairly big difference between the 3870 and the 8800GT, percentage wise it's about the same as they have shown in their review.

I wish AMD/ATi would just sit back for a bit, don't produce anything and then come back with something spectacular. Radio silence. It just seems like they're throwing stuff out there, that's inferior and hoping that people will buy them because of their 'useless' 'features' (DX 10.1).

They're playing catch up, but are barely making a scratch. Both GPU and CPU wise.

I've managed to get Crysis running smooth as ice on my Vista x64 install (which in itself gives an approx 10% better fps apparantly) at 1920x1200 res High settings;

4x1GB Geil DDR2@437fsb 4-4-4-12
8800GT@700/2000/1750

Also crucially have it running in DX9 mode (10 is a bit choppy) and I can't tell the image-quality difference tbh.

Also with SLi nVidia have blocked running on Intel chipsets through drivers I gather :(

Hope this helps

Si
