Mario Galaxy - Official Thread

Meh since the mario games went 3d they lost their appeal for me, ive tried 64 and sunshine and to me there was just a massive element missing that made them mario games. What it was i don't know but imo 3d doesn't suit mario games at all. :(
Galaxy is much more like the 2D versions than the previous 3D ones. Less exploration and much more pure platforming.

I've got a Wii, and to be honest I've had no interest in SMG at all. I think a lot of Wii owners are in the same boat, especially if they own PS3s and 360s, they just don't care and would rather play on those.

It doesn't help that there are some massive games on the other consoles and PC at the moment either.
What on earth do you have Wii for if you have no interest in one of the best games of all time? Do you not like platformers?

Why would other people who have a 360/PS3 not care about the Wii if they have one? The Wii has got at least as many good games as the PS3 and something like Galaxy surpasses pretty much anything around.

Nope, it's true. Mario is nowhere near as pretty as Zelda TP (a gamecube game) so Nintendo obviously thought graphics wouldn't add anything at all and they were 100% right. It's quite simply not that type of game.
You reckon?

Resi 4 and Zelda trash it in terms of technical prowess. I agree that the simplistic look is great though, but that's not what the question was.
It looks WAY better than TP. Ok it is a different art style but technically it is far superior.

Regarding the HD question:
HD adds nothing to a game like this. I've been playing HD games on my PC for years, that doesn't stop other games being absolutely amazing.
There is nothing extra that this game could do if it was in HD. Collecting the stars and shooting them with the Wii-mote is great. That > HD.
Of course, better graphics would always be of benefit, it just doesn't detract in something like this. It is like playing Half-Life2 and saying it is not as good as it is because it doesn't look as amazing as Crysis. There is simply nothing in HL2 that would benefit from being better graphically, aside from the graphics.
Heh, i dunno if that makes sense but i think i got my point across.

I love this game, it's so much fun. I loved Mario 64, however I never actually completed Mario Sunshine as I didnt enjoy it as much :(
Galaxy so far is looking like a must-complete game for me, and I havnt played a single player game through to the end in years.

I've managed to log up approaching 5 hours on SMG so far today, I may be getting slightly over involved in it ;)

Very minor spoiler if you haven't done the first observatories galaxies yet
I couldn't stop laughing at the ray surfing, despite dying repeatedly whilst doing it:)
The Bee was also fun, it took me a couple of star bits to realise I could crawl over her

Nintendo trying to tell us something? Look at what the letters with stars of light on them spells...

U R MR GAY

Been playing this since yesterday evening, only a few hours max but what a great game. Very polished and the controls are so natural, I can see this stealing a lot of my time. :p

Great game, but I miss being able to control the camera - Mario 64 stylee - terribly. So many times i've wanted to zoom in or rotate the view to get a better look at things. You don't realise how much it added to Mario 64 untill it's taken away. Still, great game :)

What makes it more enjoyable than Mario 64 is the risk factor involved with a lot of levels. Making jumps and timing things right makes it addictive like the 2D games. Mario 64 was more "exploration" really.
