Mario Galaxy - Official Thread

Great game, but I miss being able to control the camera - Mario 64 stylee - terribly. So many times i've wanted to zoom in or rotate the view to get a better look at things. You don't realise how much it added to Mario 64 untill it's taken away. Still, great game :)

Yep. That and the dodgy controls when you go underneath a "planet" are the only 2 negatives I have to say about the game. Great fun :)

Best platformer I've played in years, enjoyed every moment of it so far. Up to 80 something stars. The camera/controls can get a bit annoying but when switching upside down but theres only been maybe 3 occassions when I've found myself frustrated by the controls constantly switching the direction your pressing - most annoying by far <MINOR LEVEL SPOILER>

is when your running down a tower upside down with the sand ceiling/floor (depending on which way you look at it :P) chasing down on you. I died so many times there needlessly because the controls just did not smoothly change with the camera angle.

Having seen what Nintendo have managed to do with this I'm really hoping for more of the same with Mario Kart and Smash Brothers next year.. :D

I've got a Wii, and to be honest I've had no interest in SMG at all. I think a lot of Wii owners are in the same boat, especially if they own PS3s and 360s, they just don't care and would rather play on those.

I have all the current gen consoles and SMG is probably one of my most wanted games this year. Haven't been disappointed and is probably one of my all time favourite games from what i have played so far.

well, just spent the last hour or so playing SMG and i guess i'm just past the stage of playing platformers aimed at the younger gamer.

the grafix were not the best i've seen (admitidly allowances have to be made for the system it's on) with jaggies all over the place. but being used to PS3/360 grafix now, the last gen look of Wii does not show the game in it's best light.

the control method just feels so wrong and the viewing angle puts me off for the most part. thankfully the game is very easy or i'd have gave up after 10mins or so.

the sound is nothing special and adds nothing to the experience.

to finish i'd say that this is probably the worst of the 3 mario games. Mario64 was great because it was new, Sunshine for me played better but this....... perhaps it's me just wanting more from my games now or the game is being aimed at an even younger audience, whatever it is, it's not for mii.

Just out of interest are you playing it on 480p using a component cable? I am and I find that it's almost comparable to Kameo on the 360.

SMG has very good graphics imo.

You can control the camera in some areas using the D pad on the remote. Pressing up lets you go to first person view too.

So much wrong with this post.... where to start?

You have come to all the conclusion after spending "an hour" with the game.. how? You are barely past what is essential the tutorial planets!
How is it "aimed at a younger gamer"? After about 70 stars the difficulty ramps up quickly making it pretty difficult even for well seasoned gamers. Just because it has bright colours and doesn't have guns/blood, it does not make it aimed at a younger gamer. It is aimed at EVERYBODY. Galaxy has something for all ages of gamer.

The graphics are amazing for the Wii. I've been playing this game alongside Crysis and i am never disappointed by the graphics. They do everything they need to to present the game in the best possible way.

The controls for this are widely accepted as being much better than Sunshine's controls.

The fully orchestrated score is nothing special? The soundtrack in this game is one of the best around. It is fantastic.

Fine with the opinion that 64 and Sunshine are better (even if it is wrong), other than you "wanting more".... how? You have about 10 hours more before you complete the game and twice that if you want to 100% it. Finish it and then tell us what more there needs to be.

I don't even really like Mario 64 and before this my favourite platformer was Psychonauts, however, after this, nothing compares. It is just mind blowing.

EDIT:
Sales for Galaxy were pretty poor. It was 3rd in the sales rankings in the UK behind Assassins Creed (360) and CoD4 (360). That sucks!! What are all these Wii owners buying if not one of the best games ever? I hope it has long legs and goes on to sell a heap more.

playing it with the scart lead that came in the box on 36" crt TV, the same TV i use for PS3 (component) and 360 (scart). and i'm very happy with the output of the other 2 consoles.

i had just played the Ratchet PS3 demo on the sunday and then SMG today. for me, the Ratchet game had way way better grafix (did not like the game). although i do say that allowances have to be made for the Wii's less capable hardware. but still, SMG is not all that i'm told it is.

I'm playing at 480p and it is nothing at all like kameo. Put kameo back in and see for yourself!

Aye, it blows Kameo away ;)

Kameo looked pretty, but the levels were dull and not one has made me gasp like many have in Galaxy. I love the twisty, rotating stone path in the sky with thwomps on it.

Nothing in mario galaxy made me gasp, metroid prime was far more impressive imo.

I didn't find that MP3 offered anything new other than the controls, which were great. The original MP is still the better game by some margin. Mario Galaxy, on the other hand, has featured things i've never seen in a video game before. It's just an explosion of creativity.
