Emigrating

I don't understand why the UK sucks so badly. Loads of people in my school are saying "As soon as i get a degree im out of this country". I just stand there thinking wtf its not that bad.

Id love to live in the Alps. Be it in France, Austria, Switezerland or Italy. I would ski all winter and cycle all summer. I have been learning German (slowly) so its a dream thats not too far out of reach.

I lived in Bromley in Kent until I was 25, I now live in Manly just North of Sydney.

Bromley is a reasonably affluent area and yet still the "chav" society have overrun it. As I've grown up I've seen it degrade terribly, even in my adult life I've seen it change. The scum have moved in, crime has risen and it may sound silly but no one is polite anymore everyone just seems angry.

I used to drink in Bromley all the time and it's turned from a quiet place where there was never any trouble to now where they have 30-40 police around the area to stop the violence at closing time.

I now live 5 minutes walk from the beach and a 30 drive from Sydney CBD. The people here are a lot more friendly and crime is a lot less prevelant. I mentioned in a previous post that they record the previous days crimes in the local paper. There are usually 5-6 and only one of those will involve violence. Most are drink driving offences. Hell... front page news one day was a girl getting banned from the local shopping centre.

This will also sound silly but it's one of those respect things... Kids on buses will always give up their seat. Not just for old people but for anyone. I can't remember the last time I saw that happen in England, they're usually too busy spitting or swearing at you.

I just feel safer here. It is a much nicer environment for any kids I have in the future to grow up in. And there's a beach on my doorstep!

My permenant residency visa for the USA is going through at the moment :)

Edit: Read above. :p.

I'm not moving because I don't like England. I love England, it is where I was brought up and raised.

My partner is Canadian and we are considering moving to Canada permanently. I've been over quite a lot, looked at houses, the IT market sector is healthy etc. Not finding many reasons not to give it a go really. The main negative is missing my family.

They are probably being dramatic really, there is problems in the UK, like all countries, infact many countries are worse. I'm sure some people move and are really happy with their choice but I know that some people are disappointed with what it's like to actually live in another country when they discover it's not the paradise they thought it would be. Sure there is a lot of "scum" here like Andy says but maybe a move to a different area would help ease that? For me though the annoying scum would be a reason for me to leave, I think some other countries culture just doesn't breed so many scum, but again you will find varying levels of scum wherever you go.

Pretty much spot on ;) I can't remember the last time you posted something that wasn't dripping in sarcasm. I guess that's why you've got so many posts...

It's a bit hard not to in General Discussion. It's full of people constantly running down the country I love, posting about poo (quite literally) and banging about how things are 'going down the pan' and how it 'never used to be like this' despite only being like 20 years old.

England is an absolutely beautiful country. It has everything - a decent climate (ok, so it rains. But it doesn't cover the entire country in snow for 6 months, we don't get hurricanes, we don't get huge droughts and famines, etc etc), it has beautiful scenery (no, not London), it has wonderful people (You just have to go and find them), plenty of opportunity for work, etc etc.

But no, people just run it down despite having no experience of anything other than their own town. Guess what? There is more to the UK than the dodgy area of Sheffield or whatever you (Using 'you' generally) live in. There are areas of the country that are stunning.

And guess what - the rest of the world isn't some Utopia. Other countries have many things just as bad as we do. Infact, most countries have other things that are even worse. Anyone been watching Long Way Down? Have you SEEN how people live in Africa? You reckon the UK is worse?

The UK is a fantastic country. If you don't like it, stop making so much noise about it and just leave.

Stop and actually THINK for once. THINK why the news is alive with stuff now it never used to be. Ever thought it could be becuase we live in a totally connected society? 'We never used to hear about this in 1980!' Well no of course you didnt becuase you didnt have the internet, 24/7 news channel and RSS feeds on your mobile. Society may change but the general issues and problems remain the same as they've ever been.

I reckon you are safer on the streets of this excellent country now than you've ever been. Chances are the IRA won't blow you up tommorrow. The Germans probably won't launch an air raid on London next week. The police won't beat you to death for pinching an apple like they may do in other countries. And no, people from other religions are not taking over either.

Is it any wonder I resort to sarcasm when replying to some of the threads in here? If you believed everything you read in General Discussion you'd be convinced we lived in a war torn country where random skinheads beat people up for a laugh every 30 minutes, where there are more Muslims than Christians and where discussing what happened in your work toilet is the most interesting thing in the world.

The UK does not suck - just a few areas of it do. Much like any country..

We've got our problems but everyone else has got more.

yeah maybe not, but come to south london and you will probably get shot / abused / mugged / stabbed / threatened.

unfortuntely the city has become poo. i dont mind this country, taxes are a bit high but i can't live in a city all my life, especially south london. when i get a chance i will move to the countryside.

i would move abroad but my girlfriend doesn't want to :D

Well thats South London. There are plenty of other places in the UK you can live. In much the same way that Massachusetts is a glorious area of the US yet you'd not last 30 seconds in Harlem.

And like I said - you are what, 21? And you think London has 'become' 'poo'? You are barley 5 years into your working life and you think it's degraded noticeably over that time? Really? Honestly? I somehow doubt this. I'm not saying its not cack but I suspect its been cack a lot longer than 5 years.

A bit of everything really. As [TW]Fox rightly says it easy to knock England but I've seen and lived in a fair few places over there (Portsmouth, Stratford Upon Avon, Leeds, Birmignham) and they were all worse than where I now live in Australia.

I guess that's why Sydney came 9th in Mercer's 2007 Quality of Living Survey and the best UK City (London) only came 39th.

I lived in Cyprus for 2 years and while I loved it there I am so pleased to be home. I think the grass is always greener on the other side.
Every country has it good and bad points and England and has many good points.
I have to agree with many of the points that TW Fox has said.

im 20, but over time my area has gone down hill quickly. Im talking mainly about my area in my post, where over the past month or so a few people have been shot in and near.

i appreciate your post, and i agree that yes england has really nice places - i just hope to find one soon to live in (that isn't too expensive)!

I don't see the harm in trying somewhere else? It doesn't have to be because anyone thinks the UK is crap. I've lived in 3 countries and I like all of the ones I live in. It doesn't mean I'm any less or more keen to move/stay. Sometimes opportunities arise that makes it worthwhile to try a change. Change doesn't always have to be bad. I don't understand the sarcastic replies that people are giving making the assumption that people are leaving because they think the UK is crap. some people will of course dislike certain parts of it, and some people like myself who have seen half the world have been attracted by parts that other places offer and whereas it may not end up being the right decision sometimes you have to take that chance. I know there are a few places in the world I would happily live in and have done. It doesn't have to be so negative, a lot of high horses here it seems.. :/

"try coming to south london" lol, mate I lived in south london for 22 years, its really not that bad!

I lived in swansea for 3 years, that felt far more dangerous on a saturday night down the kingsway, frankly! And now I live in whitechapel - see above answer for swansea.

I agree 100% with TW Fox, well said sir!
