Half Life series.

It's not that bad, HL1 I mean, sure it's no Crysis but I enjoyed putting a few hours into it not long ago. I once again never completed it, but it't just too damn long.

COD4 for example was short and to the point, I loved it.
HL1 seems to go on forever. I prefer the shorter games. I play them, complete them and there done.

I'm only interested in the story of the game, the single player packs. I want to purchase the games that cover this.

In that case all you need is:

Halflife Source
Halflife 2
Episode 1
Episode 2

It's quite a long time since I played them, but I don't remember Blueshift or OpFor adding much to the storyline. Lost Coast is just an interactive tech demo showing off the commentary mode and HDR.

As for the graphics, I went back to Halflife to complete it in 2003 and it looked OK. Should be slightly better in the Source Engine.

The original HL is ancient, it would be hard to play today graphics wise and Portal is a bonus/puzzle game nothing to do with story so far.

Not quite true, Aperture Science is the company that is situated around Portal and it is mentioned in the storyline of HL2:EP2 :) There is also references between the two organisations (Aperture Science and Black Mesa) at various points in Portal.

Not quite true is not same as not true, the Portal aspect may shopw up in EP3 so some claim/hope.

The fact is, if you want the FULL half-life experience, portal is part of that. Yes it has nothing to do with freeman, gman and aliens (so far) but it's part of the FULL experience.

For the story:

HL1
HL2
HL2:episode1
HL2:episode2

To sum up half life 2, the story continues from the end of hl2 into ep1, and then continues further into ep2, thus are required for the plot.

Really recomend getting portal to play too, awesome concept, funny, and hopefully a taste of what's to come.

Anyone telling you that hl1 is not needed clearly isn't a true gamer of any sorts, a lot of people are in the opinion that it is far greater than hl2 (me included) i was very disappointed in hl2 having already played hl1, there's just too much of a gap between stories, and didn't have the same atmosphere. OK, so the graphics are gonna be pretty lame by todays standards, but it's still a game that NEEDS playing.

Replay value: Counterstrike source, team fortress 2, deathmatch classic, whatever floats your boat really...

They look really bad and it did in its sday as I owned all 3 titles, (cant remember but there was a add on and counter Strike), Max Payne etc can still pass today but that game looks liek a early Amiga Game.

Why the embarished smillie ?

Just because all games aren't about the spesh and sparkly factor. A game can look awesome and be just plain pants if it isn't involving.

I'd strongly recommend playing Opposing Force if you like the original Half Life. The story line doesn't have anything to do with the HL2 but dammit it's still a good game. I do hope that after EP3 Valve will do an expansion pack featuring the main protagonist of OpFor - HECU marines rock ;)

Blue Shift was ok, but too short (was supposed to be a console game originally  ) - kinda ties in with what's going on in HL2 though.

You pretty much have to play HL1 to get the full Half Life experience, its graphics are very simple but the gameplay and storyline are still better than 90% of games coming out today. Play the newer source version, crank up the resolution, details and anti-aliasing and the graphics won't bother you at all. :)

Can you post some info on Half Life source? I cant seem to find this on any online stores.

EDIT: Nevermind,

"Half-Life: Source (HL:S) is a conversion of the 1998 science fiction first-person shooter Half-Life to run on the updated Source engine developed by Valve Corporation. It is available via the Steam content delivery service, bundled with the Game of the Year Edition of Half-Life 2, and the Collectors Edition of Half-Life 2."

Bought Half Life Anthology and will be getting Half Life 2 Game of the year edition to play the source versions of CS and HL1, will get the ep1&2 once I finish all I have bought which I'm sure will be some time away.

I never liked HalfLife... Was more of a Quake 1/2 fan.

I got HL2 and only just got HL:Source when I got EP1.

Episode was was a total waste of money and a complete con, which has made me move away from Steam games and I have not bothered with them anymore, but it got me HL:Source which I thoroughly enjoyed after all these years.

If you're after a more sparkly looking version of the original, keep your eyes open for Black Mesa. Itsa mod being made by fans who like me think HL:Source is a bit like your gran wearing a trendy modern tshirt; Its updated but it just doesnt look right. They are going back and completely re-designing the levels and expanding them slightly to take full advantage of the source engine.

PK!

Gran wearing a trendy t-shirt?

LOL

Yes, I had that impression, but at the same time, when they made HL1, they broke barriers in many ways.

HL1 was a great game, that HL2 often missed out on that spark that HL1 gave us.

I feel that in some ways Quake 2 and 4 did the same.
