The song is "12 days of Christmas", and Christmas is the first day, which is the reason why the decorations come down after 12 days.

Has no connection with before Christmas.

EDIT: Just thought of another reason they shouldn't go up this early, if you've got a real tree it will be bare by the time you reach Christmas day, and cleaning up all the needles will remove any Christmas spirit you had. :p

Guy I work with has a photo of his whole family sat around his xmas tree which had lost pretty much all its needles. It looks like they're all sat round a twig he said. Trying to get an electronic version to post.
 
I'd say yes and no about it being too early. If it's your house, do whatever the hell you want with it, as long as it's tasteful. Especially if you have little kids who like helping out etc, who are you to judge people for wanting to feel a little more festive around the house? Fair enough if you don't agree with it, but some of the replies in this thread have been very rude, I'd like to see you say them to the OPs face.

Personally, first weekend of December is when we do ours, but I wouldnt complain if they went up a week earlier :D
 
ok heres a photo of the tree. Got this a few years back, its fibre optic so all the lights are built into the tree. All it needs is about 10 minutes to throw a few decorations on and it looks like this.

and finally our window decorations. We've got quite a few little kids in the street, who seem to love it, so even if you scrooges dont like em, some of us do ;)
