Morning all,

I left my pc on overnight uploading " Stuff "

Then I came into my pc room this morning to find my computer unresponsive, Just a black screen.

I have two Western Digital Raptor 74gb 8mb's linked together in raid 0

When I restarted my pc Nvraid couldn't detect the partition and eventually told me there was an error, thinking my HDD's had died I powered off the pc and let it cool down for half an hour.

When I returned I powered up the pc which imediately detected the Raid :S

But.. Windows wanted to run its drive checker which picked up TONS !! of errors.. It kept deleting files and replacing them, eventually it booted through the windows screen, however once the pc was on it was very slow and making a lot of hard drive talking noise,

But now it seems to be fine, Is this the time to start backing up all my data ??

Are the drives dying ? :(

I think general rule is - if you think it's dying/about to start dying then back it up anyway. Then think about whether the array is salvagable.

edit ninja posting rpstewart ;)

SNIP

Yes, It's time to start backing up lol. It could be just the os power options set wrong though so drives spin down and don't come back on until a restart.

The drives probably ain't dying but would not chance it. If your data is important then make sure you back it up.

Thanks for the replys chaps,

I went off to ocuk this afternoon and bought a Lacie 500 GB external drive to stick all my important stuff on,

I've tried looking at Windows Event viewer ( eventvwr.msc )

But can't see any application fault, is there a section somewhere that shows Hardware issues ?

I'm on the pc at the moment and it seems perfectly fine ** touch wood **

Right..

Fortunately I think I backed up all my info in time.

I turned my pc on yesterday afternoon and it told me that I had to insert a system disk and press enter to continue ( I didn't have a floppy disk in :p )

It wouldn't boot into windows, I tried everything I knew of.

So... I took one drive out and plugged it into my dads newly built pc and ran Western Digital Diagnostics in windows, It passed the quick test and extended test.

I also did the same with the second drive, It also passed.

Very strange IMO, I've never had Windows seem to die on me before, Is it possible that a virus did something ?

I'm rather confused at the moment !

Which RAID controller are you using?

Hello, I'm glad you posted in here.

Its the Nvraid that comes with the DFi Lanparty Ultra-D

After I reinstalled the other night after posting that message, I reset my computer after installing some new drivers. It brought up the same " System Disk Error , Please insert system disk and press enter to continue "

So I asked it to boot from the CD With the windows disk in the drive, The windows load bar went across once and the pc " Blue Screen Of Death'd "

I tried the stock settings for my pc and it still BSOD'd,

I gave up that night.

Last night I installed Windows on ONE Raptor and scrapped the RAID 0 Idea, I'm sitting here right now with no problems * * touch wood * * I've restarted the computer 10 + times and it boots fine.

I suspect that something to do with the raid has gone **** up on the board ?

Its not ideal, I have the two raptors for RAID 0 ( Speedy ) But I will have to make do with one for now,

What do you think Chris ?

Have you tried different SATA ports? BIOS update? RAID 1 instead of RAID 0.

I very much doubt that a RAID controller on a mobo would go on it's own. I'd try flashing the BIOS and re-creating the array.

I've only tried sata ports 1 and 2,

I updated the bios after it wouldn't boot with the new installation, But it didn't do anything.

I've not tried raid 1.

go into youre BIOS and make sure raid is set to enabled, and make sure the ports youre using sata1,2,3,4 etc are enabled m8, i had a problem when i updated BIOS. i would say 100% thats youre problem, its happend to me after bios update for me :D

Ta,

I will have a play :p

This used to be a common problem on old gigabyte boards

The only thing you can do is delete the array and start again from scratch

Might be worth making sure you have the latest firmware on the hard disks

Sounds like you have bad sata cables. You will probably notice that unplugging and reconnecting your drives seems to fix the issue for a while but then it comes back.. say if you take them out to put them in another computer or something.

Replace your sata cables before you do anything else. It is the cheeopest, quickest possable fix. If your too corrupted you may need to reinstall windows anyway but you could still notice an instant improvement.

If someone already mentioned that im sorry but didn't have the time to read through every post.

Hope it helps.

That was my first thought when it went wrong, so I put some new ones in,

Thanks anyway :)
