Hmm, keep the Raptors or move on?

Is it worth me selling my Raptors and replacing them with quick 500GB drives or similar?

What are my options? I like the speed, but I'm also running out of storage!

PC is used for gaming, downloading, PAR checking, extracting, burning etc. If I was to change what drives would you all recommend? I'd like to stay with WD as their RMA process is painless, though if there is a drive that offers better performance for less cash then I'm all ears.

Not too bothered about the loudness factor, though my Barracuda is driving me nuts when it seeks!

Advice please.

These are my current benches, think the fact that they are 8MB is why it isn't as fast as what it could be hence me thinking of upgrading.

Almost forgot, my current storage drive is the ST3500630AS. Don't really like it all that much, noisier then the Raptors!

i have 2 seagate barracudas 7200.10 160gb drives, altho 8mb, they outperform my 2 raptors by more than double at burst rate and about 40-50% on sustained

The HDTach on the left is 2 x 250GB Seagate 7200.10s (the new 250GB platter) and the one on the right is 2 x 36GB Raptors (both setup in RAID0), although the Seagate HDDs bench well, in general usage they just seems quite ordinary (even slightly sluggish), previously I had used 2 x 74GB Raptors in RAID0 for a couple of years and really liked how "snappy" they where, so tried the 2 x 250 Seagates in RAID0 for a few weeks, but really missed the snappy response of the Raptors, so just a day or 2 ago, I bought 2 x 36GB Raptors, and must say I am quite pleased with them. There are used for OS, and to run games from if necessary, for storage I have 2 x 500GB WD AAKSs and 2 x 320GB Seagate 7200.10s.

What you could do is either use a single Raptor or 2 Raptors in RAID0 for your OS, and buy a 500GB (say a 500GB WD AAKS) HDD for storage..:)

Thanks jbloggs thats very helpful, especially your real world experience.

Those F1's look good, but the 1T drive is pricey @ £217.36, the 750gb ones aren't too bad at £129.24, bearing in mind the 250gb Seagates are just under £45 each.

For £130 we could have the following

3 x 250gb Seagates in RAID 0= 750gb @ £133.92
1 x 750gb F1 = £129.24
2 x 36gb Raptors £131.58
1 x 150gb Raptor = £126.89

How do you reckon that 3 in RAID 0 or more in RAID 10 would fare?

Thanks for your input.

Thanks for this post, it helped me to decide what to get on my new build, going with a 150gb raptorx for os and game and a 500gb aaks for storage
